About The Role
We’re looking for an experienced Technical Desk Surveyor to join our Surveying team and play a key role in the assessment and control of large loss building claims. This is a predominantly desk‑based position, where you’ll use your technical expertise to scope works, validate costs, and support the effective resolution of complex claims — ensuring fair outcomes for customers while maintaining strong cost control. You’ll work closely with surveyors, contractors, claims handlers, and customer services colleagues, acting as a trusted technical expert across building‑related claims. Occasional field visits may be required during surge periods.

Key Responsibilities
- Carrying out desk‑based technical assessments of building insurance claims, including large loss and complex cases
- Reviewing surveyor reports, photographs, documentation and policy cover to assess validity and quantum
- Preparing accurate scopes of work and technical reports using Xactware
- Validating customer and contractor quotations and invoices to ensure costs are fair, reasonable and policy compliant
- Supporting large loss and complex claim handlers with technical input and customer communication
- Liaising with approved contractors on variations, interim payments and reinstatement methodology
- Identifying opportunities for cost savings, repudiation or further investigation, including referral for site visits
- Providing technical support to Customer Services, including first‑stage input on FOS complaints
- Acting as a technical referral point for admin teams and supporting the wider Surveying function
- Auditing surveyor and contractor performance, identifying leakage and process improvements
- Assessing subsidence claims through desk‑based review of structural indicators and expert reports
Essential Key Requirements
- Minimum 5 years’ experience in construction or a trade background
- Strong technical understanding of building repairs, reinstatement methodology and pathology
- Excellent numeracy, written and verbal communication skills
- Confident decision‑maker with strong attention to detail
- Ability to manage a high‑volume, task‑based workload
- Customer‑focused approach with the ability to handle sensitive or challenging conversations
Desirable
- 3+ years’ experience in surveying or estimating within insurance claims
- Experience using Xactware or similar estimating software
- Knowledge of HSE regulations
- Basic understanding of financial services or insurance regulations
- Qualifications in surveying (HNC or similar)
