We are recruiting a passionate and engaging Functional Skills Maths Tutor to deliver high-quality education within a custodial environment at HMP Whitemoor. As a Functional Skills Maths Tutor, you will support learners to develop essential numeracy skills through the delivery of City & Guilds Functional Skills Maths qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2. Working with small groups of learners, you will help individuals build confidence, achieve recognised qualifications and develop the skills needed to progress into employment, further learning and successful rehabilitation. This is an excellent opportunity for a tutor who is enthusiastic about Mathematics and believes in the power of education to transform lives. Your ability to make Maths engaging, accessible and relevant will play a key role in helping learners achieve their full potential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver Functional Skills Maths qualifications from Entry Level 1 to Level 2
- Plan and deliver engaging, inclusive and learner-focused lessons
- Adapt teaching approaches to meet individual learner needs and abilities
- Create a positive and motivating learning environment
- Use a variety of teaching methods and resources to maximise learner engagement
- Promote confidence, resilience and positive learning behaviours
Assessment & Learner Progression:
- Conduct initial assessments and utilise BKSB diagnostics to identify learner starting points
- Develop, implement and review Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
- Monitor learner progress against targets and qualification requirements
- Prepare learners for examinations and assessments
- Provide constructive feedback and ongoing learner support
- Implement reasonable adjustments where appropriate
Learner Support & Development:
- Support learners with additional learning needs and barriers to education
- Promote literacy, numeracy and reading for pleasure across the learning environment
- Encourage learners to achieve personal, educational and employment goals
- Build learner confidence and support long-term progression
Quality, Compliance & Partnership Working:
- Maintain accurate learner records, assessments and documentation
- Ensure delivery meets awarding body, quality assurance and contractual requirements
- Promote safeguarding, equality, diversity and inclusion at all times
- Work collaboratively with prison staff, support practitioners and employability teams
- Contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement activities
Essential Criteria:
- Level 3 qualification in Mathematics (or equivalent)
- Teaching qualification desirable, or willingness to work towards a recognised teaching qualification
- Experience delivering Functional Skills Maths qualifications
- Strong lesson planning, classroom management and learner engagement skills
- Ability to adapt teaching methods to support diverse learner needs
- Excellent communication, organisational and administrative skills
- Experience monitoring learner progress and maintaining accurate records
- Commitment to safeguarding, equality, inclusion and learner success
- Confidence and enthusiasm for teaching Mathematics
Desirable Criteria:
- Teaching qualification at Level 5 or above (PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS or equivalent)
- Experience within prison education, adult learning or further education
- Experience using BKSB or similar diagnostic assessment tools
- Knowledge of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF)
- Internal Quality Assurance (IQA) qualification or willingness to work towards
- Experience supporting learners with additional learning needs
