Role Overview

We are recruiting a committed and adaptable Functional Skills Cover Tutor to deliver high-quality education within a custodial environment at HMP Thameside. As a Functional Skills Tutor, you will work with small groups of prison-based learners, supporting them to develop their English, employability skills and core learning behaviours. You will also provide generalist cover where required, ensuring continuity of learning across the provision. The role focuses on creating engaging, supportive and structured learning environments, helping learners build confidence, achieve qualifications and work towards long-term progression and resettlement goals.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver Functional Skills provision, primarily in English, to adult learners
  • Provide generalist cover across learning programmes as required
  • Plan and deliver engaging sessions using a variety of teaching methods
  • Adapt delivery to meet individual learner needs and ability levels
  • Create a positive, inclusive and motivating learning environment

Learner Support & Progression

  • Carry out initial and ongoing assessments to inform learning plans
  • Provide clear feedback, advice and guidance to support learner development
  • Monitor learner progress and support achievement of qualifications
  • Help learners build confidence, communication skills and employability behaviours
  • Support long-term progression and resettlement outcomes

Quality, Compliance & Administration

  • Maintain accurate learner records and training documentation
  • Ensure delivery meets awarding body and quality assurance standards
  • Work professionally within a secure custodial environment
  • Contribute to continuous improvement and quality processes

Essential Criteria

  • Level 3 English qualification (or equivalent)
  • Experience delivering training or teaching to adult learners
  • Strong subject knowledge within Functional Skills / English
  • Ability to engage learners using a variety of teaching approaches
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work effectively within a structured and challenging environment

Desirable Criteria

  • Teaching or assessing qualification (e.g. AET, PTLLS, CAVA)
  • Experience delivering Functional Skills provision
  • Experience working within a prison or alternative education setting
  • Experience delivering across multiple subject areas

Training & Development

  • Full support provided to achieve a recognised teaching or assessing qualification (if not already held)
  • Ongoing professional development within education and custodial training

Additional Information

Role is based on site at HMP Thameside. Appointment subject to relevant security clearance and background checks.
