We are recruiting an enthusiastic and experienced Bike Maintenance Tutor to deliver high-quality cycle mechanics training within a custodial education setting at HMYOI Werrington. As a Bike Maintenance Tutor, you will plan and deliver engaging, practical training programmes up to Level 2, supporting learners to develop core cycle maintenance, repair and diagnostics skills. Alongside technical delivery, you will promote safe working practices, employability skills and personal development, helping learners progress toward further training or employment opportunities. Working as part of a wider education team, you will play a key role in creating a structured, supportive and motivating learning environment.
Key Responsibilities
- Teaching, Learning & Delivery
- Deliver cycle maintenance and repair training programmes up to Level 2
- Plan and deliver engaging, hands-on sessions aligned to awarding body standards
- Develop Schemes of Work and lesson plans that meet curriculum objectives
- Adapt delivery to meet individual learner needs and abilities
- Assessment & Learner Progression
- Assess learner progress and maintain accurate records
- Support development and review of Individual Learning Plans (ILPs)
- Identify additional learning needs and implement appropriate support
- Prepare learners for assessments and support successful achievement
- Learner Support & Development
- Promote employability skills, confidence and personal development
- Embed literacy, numeracy and workplace behaviours into delivery
- Support learners from diverse backgrounds, including those with additional needs
- Signpost learners to progression opportunities and wider support services
- Quality, Compliance & Safeguarding
- Maintain accurate and compliant learner records and documentation
- Ensure delivery meets awarding body and quality assurance standards
- Contribute to IQA, moderation and quality processes
- Promote safeguarding, equality and health & safety at all times
- Ensure safe working practices within the workshop environment
Essential Criteria
- Minimum 2 years’ industry experience in cycle mechanics, bike repair, engineering or similar
- Strong practical knowledge of bicycle servicing, diagnostics and repair
- Experience delivering training or supporting learning
- Excellent communication and learner engagement skills
- Ability to maintain accurate records and work within quality frameworks
- Willingness to achieve: Teaching qualification (AET/PTLLS or equivalent) within 6 months
- Assessor qualification (TAQA/CAVA or equivalent) within 12 months
- Subject-specific qualification (Level 2 delivery standard) within 2 years
- Minimum Level 1 English and Maths (or willingness to achieve Level 2)
- Ability to pass enhanced DBS and prison vetting
Desirable Criteria
- Recognised qualification in Cycle Mechanics, Engineering or related trade
- Teaching qualification (AET, PTLLS, CertEd, PGCE)
- Assessor qualification (TAQA, CAVA or equivalent)
- IQA qualification or willingness to work towards
- Experience delivering vocational training or apprenticeships
- Experience working in a custodial or alternative education setting
- Experience supporting learners with additional needs
