Role Overview
We are recruiting a motivated and hands‑on Workshop Supervisor to oversee daily manufacturing operations within a prison‑based workshop at HMP Millsike. You will supervise a small team of prisoners, supporting them to develop practical skills, work discipline, and positive employment behaviours while ensuring production targets, safety standards, and quality requirements are consistently met. This role is ideal for someone with strong leadership skills, a background in manufacturing or industrial operations, and a passion for supporting people to build skills that improve their future employability.
Key Responsibilities
- Workshop Operations & Training
- Induct and train prisoners in safe and efficient manufacturing processes.
- Deliver hands‑on guidance in tasks such as repurposing mattresses, beds, and related production activities.
- Maintain clear workflow management to meet daily and weekly production targets.
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Ensure all activity meets health & safety protocols, prison security rules, and tool‑control procedures.
- Conduct risk assessments, maintain inventory accuracy, and manage materials effectively.
- Keep compliant, accurate records of production outputs and workshop operations.
- Leadership & Prisoner Development
- Lead a small prisoner team, promoting a positive work ethic, teamwork, and accountability.
- Use restorative and rehabilitative approaches to encourage positive behaviour, reliability, and progression.
- Work in partnership with Work & Skills Coaches to support prisoners in developing transferable employability skills.
Essential Criteria
- Experience in manufacturing, production, warehousing, or industrial operations.
- Strong people‑management skills, with the ability to motivate and supervise teams.
- Awareness of health & safety and industrial risk management.
- Organised, proactive, and confident in training individuals and monitoring progress.
- Understanding of security protocols within structured or regulated environments.
Desirable Criteria
- Teaching, assessing, or TAQA qualification (or willingness to gain one).
- Experience within a custodial or secure environment.
Security & Screening Requirements
Candidates must successfully pass prison security vetting, including:
- Enhanced background checks (employment history & criminal record)
- Security vetting for custodial environments
