We are seeking a dedicated and engaging Functional Skills English Tutor to deliver high‑quality English teaching to learners at HMP Stocken. In this rewarding role, you will work with small groups of prison‑based learners to develop their literacy skills, communication abilities and confidence. You will support learners in working towards recognised qualifications that contribute to their long‑term goals, employability and progression. You will design structured lessons, deliver interactive sessions, and guide learners through their development journey. Your teaching will play a vital role in rehabilitation, personal confidence building and helping individuals reach their full potential.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging and effective Functional Skills English sessions to small groups.
- Develop learners' reading, writing, speaking and listening skills.
- Adapt lessons to suit a range of learning needs, abilities and starting points.
- Assess and track learner progress, providing clear and constructive feedback.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, assessments and achievements.
Learner Support & Development
- Create a positive, inclusive and motivating learning environment.
- Support learners in developing wider employability skills such as communication and problem‑solving.
- Contribute to individual learning plans (ILPs) and review learner progress regularly.
- Encourage learner resilience, confidence and independence.
Quality, Compliance & Collaboration
- Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement of English delivery.
- Uphold safeguarding, equality, diversity and health & safety standards at all times.
- Work collaboratively with prison staff and education colleagues to ensure smooth and effective delivery.
- Ensure all delivery meets internal quality expectations and awarding‑body requirements.
Essential Criteria
- Level 3 English qualification or equivalent.
- Strong subject expertise with substantial experience in English‑related roles.
- Experience delivering training or supporting learners in an educational or vocational setting.
- Ability to use a variety of teaching and assessment methods to engage different learning styles.
- Strong communication, organisational and interpersonal skills.
Desirable Criteria
- Teaching or assessing qualification (e.g., AET, PTLLS, CAVA).
- Experience delivering English or literacy programmes within prison education or alternative learning environments.
- Willingness to work towards a teaching or assessing qualification (full support provided).
