Role Overview
We are recruiting an experienced and motivated Education Lead (Assistant Education Manager) to support the delivery of high-quality education at HMP Feltham. In this leadership role, you will work closely with the Education Manager to oversee teaching and support staff, raise quality standards, improve curriculum delivery, and ensure an outstanding learning experience for all learners. As part of the senior leadership team, you will drive continuous improvement, contribute to performance management, ensure compliance with Ofsted and MoJ standards, and deputise for the Education Manager when needed, including taking responsibility for designated sites within a multi-site provision. This is a pivotal role with the opportunity to make a meaningful impact on learner outcomes, staff development, and the overall success of the education department.
Key Responsibilities
- Curriculum & Quality Leadership
- Lead quality assurance and quality improvement across your curriculum areas.
- Develop an engaging and innovative curriculum aligned with learner needs, employer expectations, and labour-market demands.
- Support delivery of Functional Skills, PSD, and work-based programmes.
- Promote creativity and problem-solving among tutors to raise achievement, retention, and satisfaction.
- Contribute to production of the Self-Assessment Report (SAR), Quality Improvement Plan (QIP), and curriculum planning.
- Ensure delivery meets Ofsted EIF and MoJ quality frameworks.
- Management & Staff Development
- Support the Education Manager in leading a high-performing team of teachers and support staff.
- Set, monitor, and review performance targets through structured appraisal and CPD processes.
- Manage induction, probation, development, and performance in line with HR procedures.
- Provide coaching, mentoring, and appropriate challenge to ensure consistent high-quality teaching.
- Foster a positive, collaborative, and outcomes-focused learning culture.
- Operational Leadership
- Assist with day-to-day site operations including learner induction, class allocation, and behaviour management.
- Support operational planning, resource management, and improvement of learning facilities.
- Maintain strong relationships with internal and external partners; attend and contribute to key meetings.
- Work with awarding bodies to uphold high assessment and delivery standards.
- Deputise for the Education Manager as required, including oversight of additional sites.
- Deliver teaching sessions where appropriate.
- Compliance & Performance
- Ensure all contractual KPIs are met or exceeded.
- Uphold prison security requirements and maintain a safe, compliant learning environment.
- Ensure quality processes, documentation, and records are accurate, timely, and audit-ready.
Essential Criteria
- Relevant first degree and/or professional qualification.
- Level 5 teaching qualification (minimum).
- Significant teaching experience in further education or vocational learning.
- Proven success managing curriculum development, quality systems, and staff performance.
- Strong leadership, coaching, and team-development skills.
- Excellent communication, influencing, and problem-solving ability.
- Creative, adaptable, and able to deliver against deadlines.
- Commitment to rehabilitation and reducing re-offending through education.
- Strong understanding of Ofsted EIF and quality expectations.
- Evidence of ongoing CPD.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working in prison education or secure environments.
- Experience managing multi-site provision.
