Role Overview:
We are seeking a dedicated and engaging Functional Skills English Tutor to join the education team at HMP Bure. This is a permanent, full-time position where you will deliver high-quality English teaching to small groups of prison-based learners, supporting them to build confidence, develop essential communication skills, and work towards meaningful qualifications. You will play a key role in helping learners progress both personally and academically, ensuring that structured training plans are in place and that each individual receives the support, guidance and encouragement needed to achieve their full potential.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging Functional Skills English sessions to small groups of learners.
- Plan, prepare and deliver lessons that accommodate a range of learning styles and abilities.
- Support learners to develop practical literacy skills relevant to both daily life and future employment.
- Track and assess learner progress, providing constructive feedback and maintaining accurate records.
- Create and maintain an inclusive, positive, and motivating learning environment.
- Develop individual learning plans in line with curriculum requirements and learner needs.
- Contribute to quality assurance processes and continuous improvement of the curriculum.
- Ensure safeguarding, equality and diversity principles are embedded within all teaching and learning activity.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and prison staff to ensure effective delivery and learner support.
Essential Criteria:
- A Level 3 qualification in English or equivalent.
- Strong subject knowledge with substantial practical experience in your field.
- Experience delivering English training or teaching within an education or vocational setting.
- Ability to use varied teaching and assessment methods to engage and motivate learners.
Desirable Criteria:
- A recognised teaching or assessing qualification (e.g., AET, PTLLS, CAVA, DTLLS or equivalent).
- Experience working within prison education or alternative learning environments.
