Functional Skills Trainer
Location: Middlesbrough (Tees Valley Coverage)
Contract: Permanent
Hours: 9am β 5pm, Monday to Friday
Salary: Up to Β£28,000 β depending on skills and experience
Role Overview
We are seeking a dedicated and motivated Functional Skills Trainer to deliver engaging and effective training to learners looking to develop their skills in literacy, numeracy, and digital competency.
This role involves delivering both accredited and non-accredited training programmes, assessing learner progress, and providing personalised support to help individuals achieve their goals. You will inspire confidence, foster a positive learning environment, and tailor your delivery to meet a wide range of learning needs and abilities.

Key Responsibilities
People Motivation
- Create a positive and inclusive learning environment that inspires participation and builds learner confidence.
- Identify individual learning needs and provide tailored support to help each learner overcome barriers and achieve their potential.
- Demonstrate empathy, patience, and strong interpersonal skills to engage effectively with learners from diverse backgrounds.
- Motivate and encourage learners through creative and inclusive teaching strategies.

Training & Delivery
- Deliver high-quality, engaging Functional Skills sessions in English, Maths, and IT (up to Level 2).
- Conduct initial assessments to identify learners\β starting points and areas for development.
- Plan and deliver sessions that address individual learning styles and requirements.
- Monitor and record learner progress, providing constructive feedback and adapting teaching methods where necessary.
- Manage varying group sizes and ensure effective delivery through a range of teaching approaches.
- Support continuous improvement in delivery and contribute ideas for developing new and innovative training materials.
Quality & Continuous Improvement
- Maintain accurate learner records in line with internal processes and quality standards.
- Participate in internal audits, standardisation meetings, and quality reviews as required.
- Engage in continuous professional development (CPD) to stay up to date with best practice, emerging teaching methodologies, and new technologies.
- Apply innovative approaches to teaching and assessment to improve learner engagement and outcomes.
- Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining high standards in all aspects of delivery and compliance.
Essential Criteria
- Proven experience in delivering Functional Skills or adult education programmes.
- Minimum of Level 2 qualifications in English, Maths, and ICT (or willingness to work towards).
- Recognised teaching or training qualification (PTTLS, Education & Training, or CAVA), or willingness to work towards one.
- Sound understanding of Functional Skills requirements and standards.
- Strong IT and digital literacy skills, with confidence using technology to enhance teaching.
- Ability to adapt delivery to meet diverse learner needs and varying learning styles.
- Excellent communication, organisation, and time management skills.
- Creative, inspirational, and self-motivated, with a passion for helping others succeed.
Desirable Criteria
- Bachelor\βs Degree, PGCE, QTS, or equivalent teaching qualification.
- Experience designing engaging lesson plans and using varied resources to support learning.
- Previous experience working with diverse or hard-to-reach learners.
