Working with small groups of prison-based learners, you will support individuals to develop their vital English skills, confidence, and positive behaviours, directly helping them progress toward their long-term education, training, and employment goals.

In this role, you will design engaging sessions, create personalised learning plans, and provide continuous advice and guidance to ensure each learner receives an outstanding learning experience. This is an incredibly rewarding education role where your teaching, tutoring, and mentorship will directly support rehabilitation, reducing reoffending, and personal development.

No Teaching Qualification? No Problem: Full training, funding, and support can be provided for candidates who do not currently hold a formal teaching or assessing qualification but possess strong subject knowledge and a passion for adult education or SEN/youth training.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver High-Quality Teaching: Plan and deliver dynamic Functional Skills English sessions (Entry Level to Level 2) to small groups of young offenders / adult learners.
  • Personalised Learning: Create individual learning plans (ILPs), ensuring training programmes meet specific learner needs, neurodiverse requirements, and varied starting points.
  • Engaging Resources: Use a variety of creative teaching approaches, resources, and inclusive lesson plans to engage and motivate disengaged learners.
  • Behaviour & Mentorship: Support learners to develop confidence, communication skills, and employability-focused behaviours.
  • Assessment & Compliance: Conduct diagnostic assessments, track learner progress, and maintain accurate student records in line with funding and educational standards.
  • Constructive Feedback: Provide consistent, constructive feedback to help learners achieve their qualifications and progress.
  • Collaborative Working: Work collaboratively with prison staff, security teams, and education colleagues to ensure a safe and smooth delivery of the curriculum.
  • Safeguarding: Promote safeguarding, PREVENT, equality, diversity, and inclusion across all secure learning environments.

Essential Criteria

  • Subject Qualification: Level 3 English qualification (or equivalent standard/experience).
  • Teaching Credential: Level 5 teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, Cert Ed, DTLLS) OR a willingness to work towards one with our full support.
  • Subject Knowledge: Strong subject knowledge with practical experience in your field (Adult Literacy, Functional Skills, or GCSE English).
  • Delivery Experience: Experience delivering training, tutoring, coaching, or educational sessions.
  • Adaptability: Ability to adapt teaching methods to engage diverse, vulnerable, or challenging learner groups (such as youth justice, SEN, or alternative provision).
  • Communication: Strong communication, conflict resolution, and organisational skills.

Desirable Criteria

  • Assessing Qualification: Formally recognized assessing qualification (e.g., TAQA, CAVA, A1).
  • Secure Environment Experience: Prior experience working as a Prison Tutor, OLASS Lecturer, or within a secure estate, youth justice, or alternative education provider.
