Salary: From £35,000 + £5,000 London Weighting

Role Overview: We are recruiting a Justice Education Lead (Assistant Manager) to support the effective delivery of high-quality education within a prison environment. Based on-site at HMP Feltham, you will work closely with the Education Manager to lead teaching and support staff, raise quality standards, develop curriculum, and ensure an excellent learner experience. As part of the senior leadership team, you will contribute to maximising performance across the contract, driving continuous improvement and ensuring provision meets Ofsted, MoJ and internal quality requirements. You will also deputise for the Education Manager when required and may take responsibility for a site within a multi-site provision. This role plays a pivotal part in ensuring learners receive a motivating, safe and supportive environment that improves their skills, confidence and future opportunities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Curriculum & Quality Leadership
  • Lead on quality assurance and quality improvement across your curriculum areas.
  • Develop and promote an innovative curriculum that meets learner and employer needs, including Functional Skills, PSD and work-based programmes.
  • Encourage creative, problem-solving approaches among tutors to raise standards and achieve recruitment, retention, achievement and satisfaction targets.
  • Support production of the annual SAR, QIP and curriculum planning.
  • Ensure delivery fully meets Ofsted (EIF) and MoJ expectations.
  • Management & Staff Development
    • Support the Education Manager in leading and developing a high-performing team.
    • Set, monitor and review staff performance targets using appraisal and professional development processes.
    • Manage teaching and support staff through HR processes to maximise outcomes and provision efficiency.
    • Oversee induction, probation, development and performance management for your team.
    • Provide coaching, challenge and support to ensure staff deliver consistently high-quality provision.
  • Operational Leadership
    • Assist with the day-to-day running of the education department, including learner induction, class allocation and behaviour management.
    • Support operational planning, resource management and development of facilities to enhance the learner experience.
    • Maintain positive relationships with internal and external partners, attending meetings as required.
    • Work with awarding bodies to maintain quality standards and ensure robust delivery of qualifications.
    • Deputise for the Education Manager when required, including responsibility for designated sites.
    • Deliver teaching sessions where appropriate.
  • Compliance & Performance
    • Ensure all contractual KPIs are achieved or exceeded.
    • Maintain a safe and secure environment and comply fully with all prison security requirements.
    • Ensure all documentation, quality processes and performance records are accurate and compliant.

    Essential Criteria:

    • Relevant first degree and/or professional qualification.
    • Teaching qualification (minimum Level 5).
    • Significant teaching experience.
    • Proven experience managing curriculum development, quality systems and staff performance to improve learner outcomes.
    • Ability to lead, motivate and develop a high-achieving team.
    • Strong communication, influencing and problem-solving skills.
    • Creative, flexible approach with the ability to meet deadlines.
    • Commitment to reducing re-offending through education and skills.
    • Strong understanding of the Ofsted Education Inspection Framework (EIF).
    • Evidence of continuous professional development.

    Desirable Criteria:

    • Experience in prison education or secure environments.
    • Experience managing multi-site provision.
