We are seeking a dedicated and experienced Carpentry Tutor to deliver high-quality, practical vocational training to learners at HMP Brixton. In this rewarding role, you will help learners develop valuable trade skills, gain confidence, and work towards recognised qualifications that support employment opportunities upon release. Working with small groups, you will design structured lessons, deliver hands-on workshops, and support learners through all stages of their development. Your contribution will play a vital part in rehabilitation, progression, and successful learner outcomes.
Key Responsibilities
- Deliver engaging, practical carpentry lessons and workshops to small groups.
- Develop learners' practical carpentry skills, trade knowledge, and professional behaviours.
- Tailor lessons to individual learning needs and align delivery with qualification standards.
- Assess and track learner progress, providing clear and constructive feedback.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, achievement, and assessment evidence.
Learner Support & Progression
- Build a positive, inclusive learning environment that encourages participation.
- Support learners in developing confidence, resilience, and work-ready skills.
- Contribute to the creation and review of individual learning plans.
Quality, Compliance & Collaboration
- Contribute to curriculum development and continuous improvement initiatives.
- Uphold safeguarding, equality, diversity, and health & safety requirements.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and prison staff to ensure effective programme delivery.
Essential Criteria
- Recognised Carpentry qualification (Level 2 or above).
- Significant industry experience in carpentry or construction.
- Experience delivering workshop-based or classroom-based training.
- Strong communication, interpersonal, and organisational skills.
- Ability to use varied teaching and assessment methods to engage learners.
Desirable Criteria
- Teaching or assessing qualification (e.g., PTLLS, AET, CAVA).
- Experience delivering vocational training in prison education or alternative learning environments.
- Flexibility to deliver training across multiple vocational areas.
- Willingness to work towards teaching/assessing qualifications (full training provided).
