Role Overview: We are seeking an engaging and experienced Carpentry Tutor to join the education team at HMP Brixton. This is a permanent, full-time position where you'll have the opportunity to make a meaningful difference by delivering high-quality, practical training that helps learners develop valuable trade skills and achieve recognised qualifications. Working with small groups of prison-based learners, you will deliver structured lessons and workshops that build skills, knowledge, and confidence, supporting individuals to reach their full potential and prepare for sustainable employment upon release. Our Tutors play a vital role in ensuring effective training plans are in place, delivering engaging sessions, and offering guidance and support to help learners achieve their goals.
Key Responsibilities:
- Deliver engaging and effective carpentry lessons and workshops to small groups of learners.
- Support the development of learners' practical skills, knowledge, and behaviours in line with curriculum requirements.
- Plan and deliver sessions that meet individual learning needs and align with qualification standards.
- Prepare, assess, and track learner progress, providing constructive feedback and ensuring completion of required assessments.
- Maintain accurate records of learner attendance, progress, and achievement.
- Promote a positive and inclusive learning environment that encourages participation and achievement.
- Support the development of individual learning plans and contribute to quality assurance and continuous improvement.
- Work collaboratively with colleagues and prison staff to ensure effective curriculum delivery and learner support.
- Uphold safeguarding, equality, and diversity principles in all aspects of teaching and learning.
Essential Criteria:
- A recognised Carpentry qualification (minimum Level 2 or equivalent).
- Significant vocational experience within the carpentry or construction industry.
- Experience delivering training or teaching within a workshop or classroom setting.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Ability to use a variety of training and assessment methods to engage learners.
Desirable Criteria:
- A recognised teaching or assessing qualification (e.g. PTLLS, AET, CAVA, or equivalent).
- Previous experience delivering vocational training within prison education or alternative learning environments.
- Flexibility to deliver qualifications across multiple subject areas.
If you do not currently hold a teaching or assessing qualification, full training and support will be provided to help you achieve this as part of your probationary period.
