We are looking for a compassionate and proactive Domestic Abuse Helpline Advisor to join our team. In this role, you will provide crucial support and guidance to individuals affected by domestic abuse through our helpline. You will assess the needs of callers and offer appropriate advice and referrals while maintaining a calm, confidential, and non-judgmental approach.

Key Responsibilities/ Essential Skills and Experience

  • Support individuals with life skills, to better manage their finances by reducing debt and increasing income.
  • Signpost customers to relevant sources of support, for additional guidance and advice.
  • Provide crisis intervention where necessary to prevent customer situations from escalating.
  • Be fully aware of any issues that may affect customer well-being e.g. homelessness, domestic abuse, drug, and alcohol addiction.
  • Provide a flexible service and where necessary work across all refuge sites.
  • Always operate in a person-centred and professional manner.
  • Work with customers to prepare them for their own homes and risk assess for any safety measures that will need to be in place.
  • Competent in use of IT and DATA Systems, keeping files updated.
  • Take referrals coming into refuge and complete DASH Risk Assessment – must have good knowledge of MARAC protocols and Safeguarding arrangements.
  • Have good communication skills and update domestic abuse staff in relation to their referred cases.
  • Respond to helpline calls and assess the needs of individuals affected by DVA.
  • Offer guidance, emotional support, and information on available resources.
  • Maintain confidentiality and build trust with callers.
  • Ensure accurate record-keeping and follow-up support where necessary.
  • Awareness of domestic violence and abuse issues.
  • Ability to remain calm, resilient, and non-judgmental under pressure.
  • Good organisational skills and basic ICT knowledge.
  • Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Commitment to supporting individuals affected by domestic abuse.

About You

You will have sound knowledge and understanding of Domestic Violence and Abuse and the impact on the customer and their children. Good knowledge and understanding of how to apply for Universal Credit, do housing applications, support women with no recourse to public funds, work with professionals if a woman is applying for her Indefinite leave to remain, able to access Languages are everything for those with Language barriers and support with applying for grants once a customer is ready to move on. Familiar with other Services in the Birmingham area which can provide additional support for your customer, and you must be able to communicate and advocate effectively with other professionals on behalf of your customer. Must have good listening skills and have the ability to work in a trauma-informed way. Must be an empathetic individual who is able to feedback on traumatic experiences.
