I'm working with a leading contractor supporting major power infrastructure projects across the UK. They're looking to appoint a Lead HV Substation Design Engineer with experience acting as CDAE on National Grid schemes. This is a great opportunity for an experienced design professional looking to step into a technically focused leadership role with the flexibility to work remotely.

You’ll be part of a high-performing transmission design team delivering innovative substation solutions for clients including National Grid, SSE, SPEN, and DNOs. The role involves leading substation design from concept through to construction delivery and acting as the key technical authority for both internal stakeholders and external clients.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Leading the design of substation systems including primary layouts, earthing and secondary systems;
  • Providing technical oversight and assurance throughout the design lifecycle;
  • Supporting bid teams, site engineers and project stakeholders;
  • Ensuring compliance with all relevant National Grid, British Standards and TNO/DNO specifications;
  • Collaborating with senior engineers and Design Managers to ensure delivery targets and budgets are met.

To be considered, you'll need to have prior experience in the CDAE role on National Grid projects, a degree or HND in Electrical or Electronic Engineering, and at least 5 years of hands-on experience in the power transmission and distribution sector. You'll also need a solid understanding of UK substation design standards and be comfortable using engineering design and 2D CAD software (Autodesk preferred).

What’s on offer includes:

  • A competitive salary of £75,000 to £90,000 depending on experience;
  • Company car or car allowance (EV options available);
  • 25 days holiday plus bank holidays;
  • Discretionary annual bonus;
  • Private healthcare or health cash plan;
  • Enhanced pension scheme;
  • 24/7 online GP access;
  • Retail discounts;
  • Life assurance;
  • Access to structured professional development.

This is a remote-first role with occasional travel to project offices or sites as needed. If you're an experienced HV Design Engineer looking for your next step, I'd be happy to talk through the details. Please apply or get in touch directly for a confidential conversation.
