Financial Controller in Redruth

Redruth Full-Time On-site
Trial Balance Consulting Ltd

Trial Balance Consulting are delighted to be working with a brand-new client to recruit a Financial Controller for this established and highly respected charity based in Redruth.

This is a genuinely interesting opportunity for an experienced finance professional to join a small, close-knit organisation that plays an important role in supporting community and social enterprise sector across Cornwall.

Reporting to the Director of Operations and sitting as part of the Senior Leadership Team, you’ll take ownership of the organisation’s financial function while also providing the financial insight, challenge and forward planning needed to support its longer-term sustainability.

Key responsibilities will include:

  • Leading the organisation's financial strategy, including medium and long-term financial planning, reserves, treasury management and investment strategy
  • Taking responsibility for the day-to-day finance function, ensuring robust controls, compliance and effective processes
  • Preparing monthly management accounts and financial reporting for the Senior Leadership Team and Board of Trustees
  • Leading the annual budgeting process and ongoing forecasting, scenario planning and financial modelling
  • Monitoring financial performance, identifying variances, risks and opportunities and providing clear recommendations to senior stakeholders
  • Providing financial analysis and insight to support funding bids, service development, investment decisions and cost improvement initiatives
  • Managing cash flow and maintaining strong financial controls and governance
  • Overseeing payroll, accounts payable, receivable, reconciliations and wider bookkeeping activities
  • Leading the annual accounts and external audit process and acting as the key senior contact for auditors
  • Ensuring statutory reporting requirements are met, including Charity Commission reporting
  • Maintaining oversight of restricted funds and grant income, including tracking eligible expenditure and supporting grant reporting
  • Preparing financial papers for Board and Finance Committee meetings and attending meetings to present financial information
  • Acting as the owner of the financial risk register and contributing to the development of financial policies and procedures
  • Working closely with the CEO, SLT and wider team to ensure financial information is understood and used effectively across the organisation

We're looking for a qualified accountant (ACA, ACCA, CIMA or equivalent) with strong experience across financial management, management accounts, budgeting, forecasting and financial reporting.

You'll need to be comfortable operating at both a strategic and hands-on level. This is a relatively small organisation, so we're looking for someone who is happy getting stuck into the detail but who can also step back, interpret the numbers and explain what they actually mean to non-finance colleagues, senior leaders and Trustees. You'll ideally have experience working within the charity or voluntary sector, with a good understanding of restricted funds, grant income and associated reporting requirements.

You'll also need excellent analytical and communication skills, strong attention to detail and the confidence to provide constructive financial challenge when required. Experience with Xero would be beneficial, alongside advanced Excel skills. Most importantly, you'll need to be someone who enjoys working collaboratively and wants their financial expertise to contribute to an organisation with a clear social purpose.
