Reporting To: Management Accountant

Working pattern: 1 FTE

Role Purpose: The Assistant Management Accountant will support the production of accurate and timely financial information, including management accounts, budgets, and forecasts, while ensuring compliance with housing sector regulations. The post holder is responsible for supporting the production of monthly management accounts, quarterly forecasts, and the annual budget.

Key Accountabilities

  • Monthly Management Account
    • Support the Management Accountant with the production of the monthly management accounts pack including variance analysis and commentary
    • Prepare the monthly budget holder reports for distribution on behalf of the management accounts team
    • Post journals including accruals, prepayments
    • Prepare ad-hoc management accounts to support decision-making
  • Budgeting and Forecasting
    • Assist with the preparation of the annual budget and liaising with budget holders and senior managers to ensure timeliness, accuracy, and clarity of information
    • Collaborate with the team and budget holders to ensure that all regular forecasts are prepared within the given deadlines
  • Statutory Accounts and Audit
    • Support the Senior Accountant with statutory year-end accounts, audit preparation, and regulatory reporting
    • Maintain strong financial controls and audit trails
    • Champion compliance with the Financial Control Framework, policies, and procedures ensuring that appropriate financial internal controls are in place across the organisation
    • Support internal and external audits
    • Ensure compliance with accounting standards
  • Business Partnering
    • Provide financial assistance and advice to budget holders, ensuring that they are adequately trained in financial awareness and budget monitoring and setting
    • Hold regular management accounts meetings with budget holders to support their understanding of the management reports
    • Liaise appropriately within the finance department and the directorate(s) on day-to-day financial management
  • Systems & Process Improvement
    • Use the finance system, Unit4 (Agresso), and housing management system, Orchard
    • Assist in improving financial processes and reporting efficiency
  • General
    • Support the Management Accountant in maintaining accurate financial transactions across the business. This includes checking the accuracy, processing, and correcting any errors in relation to the daily job cost and stock journals
    • Carry out projects and implement efficiencies identified as part of the annual departmental plan

Such other duties, commensurate with grade and experience, as required by the Management Accountant, Senior Accountant, or the Head of Finance.

Person Requirements to Fulfil the Role

  • AAT (Part Qualified) or equivalent
  • Commitment to own personal and professional development
  • Experience of working in a busy finance department in a management or financial accounts team
  • Involvement or knowledge of budget setting, management account preparation, and forecasting process
  • Demonstrable experience of preparing monthly management accounts including accruals, prepayments, and deferred income
  • Strong MS Excel skills including pivot tables and lookup functions
  • Good attention to detail, with experience in reconciliations and variance analysis
  • Strong analytical skills, able to interpret and present complex data clearly
  • Strong communication skills, able to communicate financial information clearly at all levels to both finance and non-finance colleagues
  • Ability to build strong working relationships with managers, budget holders, and colleagues
  • Experience supporting budget holders or non-finance colleagues
  • Strong organisational skills, able to work under pressure, prioritise workload and meet operational and financial deadlines
  • Ability to provide timely and accurate information
  • Flexible, motivated and with the ability to work on own initiative or unsupervised where appropriate
  • Ability to work both collaboratively within a team and independently
  • Ability to learn new skills and adapt to the changing work environment
  • Awareness of Data Protection and online safety

Desirable

  • AAT Fully Qualified or equivalent
  • Previously worked within the social housing sector or for a housing organisation
  • Awareness of the regulations, and legislation applicable to registered social landlords
  • Familiarity with Unit4 ERP (Agresso) and FP&A
  • Ability to deliver effective training to non-financial colleagues
