At Treeconomy, we believe in the regenerative power of nature. We’re on a mission to combat climate change, restore ecosystems, and improve livelihoods. By embracing remote sensing technology and financial innovation, we are revolutionising nature restoration and incentivising project developers and land managers to grow and conserve flourishing, climate-positive forests.

We’re a venture-backed earth-tech startup working at the dynamic intersection of technology, ecology, and finance. We are a small but committed team working to bring traceability, transparency, and trust to nature-based carbon removal and ecosystem restoration, harnessing innovation to make a meaningful difference by driving finance toward worthy projects.

We support rural landowners and natural capital investors with project development, financing, measurement, and monitoring services, leveraging earth observation and geospatial AI to help accelerate and scale high-quality nature restoration projects globally.

We’re hiring a Full-Stack Software Engineer to accelerate development of Sherwood — our primary platform for engaging nature project developers and investors. Sherwood houses all project data and is where we publish monitoring, reporting, and verification outputs; it’s the place we “do everything” for projects.

You’ll be a full-stack engineer (React/Next.js on the frontend, Node.js and Python on the backend) who is deeply product-oriented and comfortable making pragmatic technical decisions in a fast-moving startup environment. You’ll collaborate closely with Product and Design, translate Figma into usable, fast, and elegant interfaces, and own performance and architectural improvements that move the needle for our users and the business.

Primary objectives
  • Ship the next version of our monitoring products — a major upgrade to our core project assessments that help developers get nature-based carbon projects off the ground and into validation.
  • Improve flexibility of platform architecture — ensure that we can serve responsive content on the platform for a host of new configurations to our existing products.
  • Build the UX foundations for Sherwood — a components library, information architecture, and design system to help us ship faster and make Sherwood the place where customers return to add data and gain insights on their nature restoration projects.
  • Prioritise code quality — incrementally tackle technical debt to future-proof Sherwood and free up developer and sales time.

You will work closely with our Science Lead, Product Manager and Designer, and Geospatial Data Engineer. This is a semi-autonomous IC role with the chance to make a large contribution to our product as part of a small, high-impact team.

Your Profile
  • Technical & Scope — You independently deliver moderate features end-to-end across React/Next.js (building accessible, responsive components, sensible data-fetching) and Node.js (clear handlers, error states).
  • Autonomy — You anticipate blockers (ambiguity, dependencies, performance pitfalls) and propose incremental improvements (small refactors, dependency updates, pattern tidy-ups) that reduce risk without derailing delivery.
  • Product Orientation — You balance user needs with technical feasibility. You care about the usability of reports and can explain trade-offs (e.g., SSR/ISR/client) in plain English.
  • Delivery — You communicate proactively in Slack/Notion, keep PRs small and reviewable, write crisp documentation, and hit agreed milestones—or renegotiate early with options.
  • Collaboration — You pair program when useful, give constructive code reviews, and work smoothly with Product and Design (turning Figma into clear UI and asking for clarification when intent is ambiguous).
  • Strategic Leadership — You contribute ideas that influence our approach (component patterns, modest architecture tweaks), and you participate in lightweight design discussions/RFCs—without needing to be the final decision‑maker.
  • Mission-Driven — you care sincerely about using your talents to build tech that makes a difference for people and planet.
Must-haves
  • 5+ years of relevant professional experience.
  • Solid experience with Python, React + Next.js and Node.js, delivering features in production.
  • Ability to translate Figma designs into accessible, responsive, well-structured components.
  • Ability to design, deploy, and maintain scalable APIs using Python (FastAPI), ensuring high availability on cloud platforms with crisp, up-to-date documentation.
  • Familiarity with Docker ecosystems for containerizing applications and managing images via modern registries.
  • Evidence of proactive communication and clear documentation.
  • Demonstrated product sense: can discuss user impact and pragmatic trade-offs.
  • Comfortable improving performance and reliability as part of everyday work.
  • Ability to operate in a startup environment: ambiguity, fast iteration, and principled trade-offs.
  • Experience working with geospatial data in the context of delivering a product to non-technical users.
Nice-to-haves
  • Experience with MS Azure and Google Cloud.
  • Experience contributing to or establishing a components library/design system.
  • Familiarity with performance tooling and targeted testing.
  • Exposure to data-heavy UX, especially geospatial applications.
  • Prior startup experience.
  • Proficiency using AI tooling to speed up engineering workflows while maintaining high quality standards for code.
  • Exposure to climate, Monitoring Reporting and Verification, natural resources, or the Voluntary Carbon Market.
Tech Stack & Collaboration
  • Frontend: JavaScript, TypeScript, React, Next.js, Mapbox.
  • Backend: Node.js, Python, Postgres, MongoDB, FastAPI.
  • Collab & delivery: Slack, Notion, GitHub, Linear, Figma.
Location & hours

UK-based, with core hours 10:00–16:00 for collaboration. Fully remote for candidates outside commuting distance of London; if you're based near London, we'd love to have you co-working with us in central London 2 days a week.

Contract
  • Engagement: Full-time (Senior Full-Stack Software Engineer).
  • Time commitment: 5 days/week.
  • Start date: ASAP — we're happy to work around notice periods for the right candidate.
  • Gross Salary: Competitive (paid in GBP).
  • Equipment: A company laptop can be provided.

We value engineers who bring clarity. You’re comfortable stating what’s true — especially when it’s inconvenient — and explaining what’s happening, why it matters to users and the business, and what you recommend next. You favour simple, well-tested solutions and steady delivery over clever complexity.
