The role also involves instrumental performance checks and maintenance as well as supporting the sensory evaluation of products and general laboratory maintenance.

What you’ll be doing:

  • GC‑FID analysis of flavour and fragrance materials to determine if the product profile is acceptable.
  • GC‑MS analysis to identify unknowns and determine plausibility in the product.
  • Chiral and FAME analysis of raw materials to determine authenticity.
  • Sample preparation for analysis.
  • Carrying out preventative and reactive maintenance on GC‑FID systems, to include needle and inlet maintenance, column installation and trimming.
  • Performing weekly verification checks on FID systems to ensure they are fit for use.
  • Participate in organoleptic evaluation of the products, as necessary.
  • Preparation of tasting solutions and arrange for a representative number of individuals to carry out analysis.
  • When necessary, arrange for analytical samples to be sent for external analysis and collate the results.
  • As required undergo training to measure physical parameters of flavour and fragrance raw materials originating from various departments and external sources, which includes but is not exclusive to density, refractive index, optical rotation, melting points and flash points.
  • Perform peroxide values, acid values, ester values and instrumental analysis including UV spectroscopy, IR, and liquid chromatography.
  • Prepare reagents to the required standard for routine and non‑routine analysis.
  • Assist in sample receipt to the Quality Control laboratory when required to maintain workflow of sample analysis to the required areas of the department.
  • Carry out day to day laboratory checks and housekeeping tasks, including washing glassware and emptying wet bins at the end of each day.
  • Contribution to continuous improvement in the Quality Department (e.g. suggestions on improvements in efficiency, cost cutting, improvements in effectiveness of operations).
