What Is the Opportunity? Join Travelers as we transform our Technology landscape. Our Software Engineering team enables a seamless customer experience through technology solutions. As an Assistant Vice President, Software Engineering you will lead our Engineering team to accelerate growth and transformation of our Technology. You will leverage your leadership skills and engineering experience to strategically plan, influence, and execute design, development and implementation of complex problems and establish best practices and standards.
Travelers Europe currently offers flexibility to employees who wish to work on a hybrid basis in accordance with our Hybrid Work Arrangements Policy. This entails full time employees working three days a week in the office and two days at home (or pro rata for part-time employees). This policy may be changed at the Company's discretion.
What Will You Do?
- Lead teams of Software Engineers by providing technical guidance and mentorship while modeling Travelers' leadership behaviours to foster a team environment.
- Partner with businesses to establish strategic direction, develop product roadmaps, provide technical oversight for large programs, and implement optimal solutions to meet business needs.
- AI-Assisted Engineering Practice - Champion the adoption of AI-assisted development tools and practices across the engineering function, including code generation, testing, and review, embedding these into team workflows to drive measurable gains in delivery speed and code quality.
- Agentic Solution Development - Lead the engineering design and delivery of LLM-powered agentic solutions that meaningfully augment how users work, supporting the architects on the architectural patterns, and driving the delivery that will underpin EUR Tech's AI product capability.
- Responsible AI & Governance - Ensure all AI and agentic solutions are designed and delivered within an appropriate governance framework, covering model risk, data handling, transparency, and human oversight, working with architecture and risk functions to ensure alignment that allows us to keep pace with the speed of AI adoption.
- Align work with business and engineering priorities to realize meaningful impact.
- Build collaborative relationships with key leaders and peers across the organization to ensure the best use of overall resources.
- Provide unique opportunities and challenges to enrich development of team members, assess skill gaps, develop mitigation efforts, and equip individuals with skills, tools, and standard approaches to improve the overall quality of engineering practices and skill sets.
- Apply knowledge of current industry trends and techniques to formulate solutions for software engineering problems.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?
- Ten years of related experience; including insurance / financial services industry experience.
- Demonstrated experience implementing current technology trends and techniques (e.g., cloud-based solutions leveraging microservices).
- Demonstrated experience championing AI-assisted engineering practices and leading delivery of agentic solutions, with the judgement to ensure these are governed responsibly from a risk, data, and oversight perspective.
- Interprets internal/ external business challenges and recommends best practices to improve SDLC processes.
- Excellent delivery skills with the ability to examine and assess the effectiveness of software design strategies and methodologies, devise, apply, and share ways to ensure the quality of complex computer systems, incorporate awareness and understanding of work happening outside of the team, and develop widely used technical metrics that enable engineers to better understand and deliver their work.
- Demonstrated track record of domain expertise including the ability to consult on business priorities and optimize value by identifying business aligned solutions and improve company capabilities by thoughtfully introducing concepts and technologies from the industry.
- Strong problem solving skills with the ability to create architecture that is particularly robust against single points of failure and turn future areas of need into action.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to describe technology concepts in ways the business can understand, document effectively, and collaborate across disparate groups.
- Strong leadership skills with the ability to engage with other leaders and networks to solve problems as well as work to improve the entire engineering organization by sharing knowledge while creating opportunities for others to develop skills.
What is a Must Have?
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or its equivalent in work experience.
- Seven years of programming/development experience.
- Five years of experience of technical leadership.
