What Is the Opportunity? Our Cyber Underwriting team are looking for a high-impact Director to lead the London Market underwriting team. You’ll be at the heart of our Cyber portfolio; working closely with our Head of Cyber to support the strategic direction and growth of the book. You’ll combine hands-on underwriting with strategic influence – managing a team and shaping how we grow in the London market. You’ll lead on pricing and risk selection, guide complex and high-profile accounts, and be a visible market voice through broker engagement, thought leadership, and industry events. With responsibility for driving production, profitability and underwriting excellence, you’ll report on the success of the book and help execute our strategy. This is an incredible opportunity for a technical underwriter with Cyber experience in the London Market to drive portfolio performance, and play a pivotal role in the future direction of our Cyber business.

Travelers Europe currently offers flexibility to employees who wish to work on a hybrid basis in accordance with our Hybrid Work Arrangements Policy. This entails full time employees working three days a week in the office and two days at home (or pro rata for part-time employees). This policy may be changed at the Company’s discretion.

What Will You Do?

  • Achieves the annually agreed production and profitability objectives.
  • Ensures that new business, renewals and mid term adjustments within assigned product(s) are underwritten within published guidelines and authorities.
  • Polices processed onto IT systems as required by the Commercial Underwriting Practices Manual.
  • Accountable for adequate pricing and classification of risks within assigned product(s) in accordance with the Underwriting Guidelines and rating consideration, liaising with Actuarial Department as required.
  • Ensures adequate information is obtained to enable the selection of high quality business within the product segment.
  • Ensures that all business written is within the gross and net capacity agreed each year in the structure of the ceded reinsurance programme.
  • Monitors market developments within assigned product(s) and ensure that opportunities are maximised and threats are minimised.
  • Researches and develops new and existing areas within the product(s).
  • Ensures policy documentation for customers accurately reflect coverage agreed and issued within the agreed service standards.
  • Promotes Travelers products, distribution strategy and philosophy and provides guidance on the Company's underwriting philosophy, procedures and requirements by regular visits to brokers premises maximising the opportunities for growth and profit of the commercial business.
  • Ensures underwriters writing for the product comply with their authority levels, the Product Underwriting Guides, Technical Underwriting Guides and Commercial Underwriting Practice Manual and the Business Partner & Processing Manual.
  • Performs process and underwriting competency audits to ensure the audit requirements established for Commercial Underwriting are complied with and underwriting standards within the product(s) are both maintained and continually improved upon.
  • Ensures that high quality customer service is delivered to brokers and customers in line with the Commercial Insurance service standards and/or product specific service levels.
  • Supports the objective to ensure that a high quality risk management service is provided for customers.
  • Handles referrals and underwriting of complex and/or high profile accounts and underwriting individual risk accounts.
  • Sets and maintains underwriting guidelines for assigned product(s), in collaboration with Chief Underwriting Officers and Technical Solutions to ensure that the Technical Underwriting Guides and Commercial Underwriting Practice Manual are adhered to.
  • Makes recommendation for and appropriately maintains underwriting authority documents within the Company for assigned product(s) based upon individual underwriting experience and competencies.
  • Sets work objectives and goals for employees and manages performance. Typically involved in hiring and compensation decisions.
  • Seeks out opportunities to champion or lead projects to improve efficiencies and effectiveness within product(s).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

What Will Our Ideal Candidate Have?

  • Bachelor's Degree or higher education level. Relevant experience in Underwriting preferred, with a thorough understanding of the assigned product(s).
  • Advanced level of proficiency required in the following: Organisation, Financial Acumen, Communication, Collaboration, Presentation Skill, Networking, Risk Selection and Critical and Analytical Thinking.
  • Advanced level of proficiency required in the following leadership competencies: Leading the Business including; Change Management, Strategic Planning, Making Decisions, Results Orientation, Influencing, Leadership, Power, Business Perspective, Risk Taking, Innovation and Understanding & Navigating the Organisation.

  • Advanced Qualification in Insurance preferred (ACII or equivalent).

What is a Must Have?

  • Extensive understanding of UK Professional Indemnity or Financial Institutions and Management Liability.
