We insure small businesses and enable big dreams – not just for our customers, but for our people and communities too. With over 1,000,000 active insurance policies, we protect builders, bakers, landlords and more than 1,200 other trades. We’re a technology company as well as one that sells insurance. That means we build, we fail, we learn and we improve. Through our global social impact strategy, called 'The Big Dreams Project’, we’re working to help 10,000 small businesses start or grow by 2030.
Here’s what you’ll be doing: You’ll be a vital part of the Engineering team at Simply Business, playing a paramount role in shaping our customer journey and driving forward-thinking initiative programmes. We do our homework and share our expertise to ensure we are building the most reliable insurance platform for our 900,000+ customers. We’re a pioneering team that isn’t afraid to challenge the status quo. You’ll work with a refreshing tech stack that includes Ruby, Ruby on Rails, MongoDB, AWS, Docker, Kafka, Terraform, JavaScript, SCSS, React, and Webpack.
As one of our Senior Software Engineers, you’ll:
- Be hands-on in developing our products using best practices, appropriate tools, and technologies.
- Work with cross-functional collaborative teams, helping to clarify requirements and suggesting different technical approaches.
- Champion Agile processes across the team to keep our delivery refreshing and efficient.
- Highlight areas for continuous improvement and drive their prioritisation.
- Mentor junior members of the team, sharing your expertise to help others grow.
- Be proactive in suggesting new tools, technologies, and ways of working.
We’re looking for someone who is:
- An expert programmer in any language—we value your engineering mindset over specific labels, so Ruby experience isn’t essential as long as you’re happy to learn it with our support.
- Eager to work collaboratively; we don’t believe in "business vs. tech" silos and operate as one team toward shared goals.
- A relatable communicator with the interpersonal skills to thrive in our open, friendly, and honest environment.
- Proactive and spirited when it comes to suggesting new tools or processes that help us continually improve.
We encourage people of all different backgrounds and identities to apply. We are committed to maintaining an inclusive, supportive place for you to be you and do your very best work.
Join a team where engineering isn’t just a department, but the engine of our innovation. At Simply Business, you won’t just be writing code; you’ll be solving complex architectural challenges at scale, from streamlining Kafka pipelines to optimising our AWS infrastructure. We’re looking for tech-minded pioneers who want to move fast, remove complexity, and build products that genuinely empower small businesses. If you’re ready to dive into a high-growth environment where your technical input directly shapes our roadmap, we want to hear from you. Apply today.
