Our Legal and Compliance function plays a central role in helping us stay compliant, informed and accountable.
We are now looking for a Legal and Compliance Officer to join our team, with a strong focus on compliance and data protection. You’ll also support the wider business with day-to-day legal work, but the majority of your time will sit within compliance, data governance and maintaining high standards across our regulatory responsibilities.
This role would suit someone early in their career who has up to two years’ experience in the relevant areas and who is keen to deepen their expertise. You must hold (or be working towards) a recognised practitioner-level data protection qualification, as this role requires a solid grounding in UK GDPR and the Data Protection Act.
What you’ll be doing
- Compliance and Data Protection (primary focus):
- Managing the data protection inbox and escalating queries where needed
- Supporting and logging Data Subject Rights requests
- Receiving, reviewing and coordinating Data Subject Access Requests in a timely and accurate way
- Identifying and logging potential data protection complaints or breaches
- Keeping our register of data protection incidents, near misses and actions up to date
- Recording complaints and incidents using our service desk system
- Supporting our annual Information Asset Register updates and data mapping processes
- Preparing statistics and reporting on DSARs, erasure requests, breaches and other compliance activity
- Preparing documents and packs ahead of quarterly Data Governance Office Committee meetings
- Supporting the development, roll out and monitoring of compliance policies and procedures
- Providing general administrative support for the data protection and compliance function
- Providing colleagues with guidance on legal queries and contract terms, particularly with regulatory relevance
- Preparing first drafts of documents and conducting legal research
- Organising and maintaining contract information in our electronic systems
- Analysing legal information and maintaining accurate records
- Preparing written updates on legal topics for internal teams
- Assisting with legal complaints and filing documents at court when required
- Supporting the planning and delivery of internal legal training
- Helping to keep the legal function running smoothly through day-to-day administrative support
What you’ll bring:
- Up to two years’ experience in a legal, compliance or data protection role
- A recognised practitioner qualification in data protection, such as the BCS Practitioner Certificate (or equivalent)
- A solid understanding of the Data Protection Act 2018 and UK GDPR
- A legal background such as solicitor, CILEX professional or equivalent experience
- Excellent organisational skills and the ability to prioritise across multiple tasks
- Strong written and verbal communication skills with great attention to detail
- Confidence handling confidential information
- Good Microsoft Office skills and confidence working with digital systems
Who you are:
- Honest, methodical and detail focussed
- Curious and keen to understand systems, processes and how they can be improved
- Professional, personable and able to build positive relationships across teams
- Enthusiastic, willing to learn and open to developing new skills
- Comfortable managing tight deadlines with good judgement and clear thinking
- A supportive team player who can also work independently when needed
