Job Summary: Trapeze ITS UK, a leading provider of intelligent transport systems, is seeking highly motivated and experienced Electronics Bench Engineer to join our Stores Team, based in Loughton, Essex on a full-time basis. The Bench Engineer sits within the material support centre Team, reporting to the Bench Technician. As a Bench Engineer, your role will be working in our Electronics repair workshop in Loughton. The position is for the repair and refurbishment of our Realtime passenger information systems hardware. This will involve a knowledge of our operating software and associated support files required by our systems. Repairs will be to component level, with a good knowledge of through hole and SMD component replacement technology, along with a good attention to detail and accurate record keeping. The role also includes providing customers with quotations for chargeable repairs and associated administration.
Key Responsibilities:
- Primary
- Work with the engineering delivery team to understand commitments and work with the team to meet deadlines.
- Working to ISO standards (9001 & 27001).
- Generate reports and maintain accurate up to date records at all times.
- Fault Diagnostics & Electronics Repair
- Troubleshoot to PCB component level using schematics, datasheets, and board views.
- Conduct safe ESD controlled rework: through hole and SMD soldering (fine pitch, QFN/QFP, connectors).
- Replace common failure items (voltage regulators, protection devices, connectors, passives), perform continuity/insulation checks, and verify repairs.
- Escalate complex failures with clear fault reports.
- Ability to repair to component level.
- Workshop & Stores Support
- Supporting asset management process.
- Goods in visual and electrical inspection of returned and new stock; booking in process.
- Manage spares, consumables, test jigs and tools; raise replenishment requests.
- Keep benches, tools, and ESD stations audit ready.
- Documentation & Quality
- Follow test/repair work instructions, SOPs, and rework standards.
- Complete tickets, service reports, and part usage logs accurately in real time.
- Contribute to continuous improvement by feeding recurring faults and ideas back to engineering.
- Adhere to ISO 9001 processes and data handling practices aligned to ISO 27001 where applicable.
- Health, Safety & Compliance
- Work within ESD controls (IEC 61340), electrical safety, and safe use of hand tools and chemicals.
- Use PPE as required; risk assess unusual tasks; report near misses and incidents promptly.
- Ensure all activities comply with contractual obligations and company standards.
- Collaboration and Communication
- Communicate effectively with team members to ensure smooth operations.
- Work closely with Bench Technician regarding prioritisation and adherence to company and project goals and targets.

- Operate independently, managing your own workload and priorities.

- Good administrative and organisational skills.
- Seek guidance when necessary but maintain the ability to make informed decisions autonomously.
Key Skills:
- Required
- Competent with multimeters, bench PSUs, basic oscilloscopes, and hand tools (crimpers, strippers, torque drivers).
- Good soldering and rework skills.
- Ability to read electronic drawings/ schematics / wiring diagrams and follow work instructions.
- Familiarity with AVL equipment and cable assemblies.
- Comfortable using a PC for logging work (Excel, ticketing systems, asset management) and applying firmware/configs to devices.
- Desirable
- Exposure to CAN bus tools (e.g., CAN analysers), LIN sniffing, or basic serial/UART diagnostics.
- Basic RF awareness (antenna checks, coax terminations, VSWR basics) for GNSS/cellular leads.
- Experience with test jigs, boundary/functional test scripts, or simple fixture maintenance.
- Awareness of 5S/lean, Kaizen, or similar.
Qualifications:
- Level 3 NVQ/SVQ, BTEC National Diploma, or equivalent in Electrical/Electronic Engineering (or strong practical experience). Degree level preferred.
- IPCA610 and/or IPC7711/7721 certification (or willingness to obtain).
- 1+ year in an electronics workshop/repair, automotive electrics, or instrumentation environment (placements/college projects count).
- Full UK driving licence (desirable for occasional vehicle based checks or collections).
