TrapDtek is a start-up company based at Innovation RCA, developing wearable rescue indicators that can be paired with a new innovative energy harvesting system to optimize emergency services operations when finding missing persons.

We are seeking a loT Energy Systems Engineer with strong expertise in antenna design (circuity), RF systems, and energy harvesting power electronics to lead the development of a minimum viable prototype (MVP) of a novel wireless device. The role focuses on designing and validating a feasible proof-of-concept system, demonstrating the integration potential between the antenna subsystem (within the RF-activated wearable) and an independent energy harvesting and battery management circuit. You will be responsible for advancing the concept from design to a working prototype that validates both the RF performance and energy autonomy of the system. This position blends applied research with practical prototyping and system optimization.

Key Responsibilities

  • Aid the design and build of a functioning MVP prototype that demonstrates core system feasibility, including an operational antenna system and a separately functional energy harvesting and storage unit.
  • Define the technical architecture and experimental framework to validate performance metrics such as harvested energy levels, antenna efficiency, power transfer, and system scalability.
  • Design and simulate antennas optimized for the target frequency range and physical constraints of the MVP prototype.
  • Develop and test RF matching networks and evaluate antenna integration into the prototype’s mechanical structure.
  • Design and implement a standalone energy harvesting and power management system capable of charging and powering low-power electronics.
  • Experiment with various harvesting modalities (RF, solar, vibration, thermal) to determine optimal energy sources for the application.
  • Design battery management and charge circuits suited for micro-power conditions and duty-cycled operation.
  • Analyse system power budgets, conversion efficiency, and storage stability.

Outcome Goals

  • Aiding in delivery of an early MVP prototype where both the antenna and energy harvesting subsystems operate independently yet validate overall system feasibility.

Qualifications & Ideal Candidate

  • Hold a Bachelors and/or Masters in electrical engineering, chemical engineering, design engineering, geomatics, or similar.
  • Have experience working on projects that involve circuit/battery design and optimization.
  • Be located in London, UK and commit to on-site development.
  • Be willing to partake in field trials outside of London (all travel expenses would be covered for off-site work).
  • Must be British National OR hold a Graduate Route Visa that permits you to work.

Hours: looking for either subcontract or a part-time employee, minimum contract 3-6 months.
