The Apprentice Site Mechanical Engineer will support the delivery of mechanical installation, commissioning, and maintenance activities across water projects. The role combines on-the-job site experience with formal apprenticeship training, providing a practical pathway into mechanical engineering within the water and process industries. The apprentice will work under close supervision from experienced engineers and site managers, developing technical, safety, and professional skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Responsibilities:
    • Assist with mechanical installation works, including pumps, valves, pipework, tanks, screens, mixers, and process equipment.
    • Support site inspections and basic checks of mechanical installations.
    • Assist with mechanical commissioning and testing activities under supervision.
    • Support routine maintenance tasks and equipment checks.
    • Help prepare tools, materials, and equipment for site activities.
    • Assist in identifying defects, snags, and mechanical issues.
  • Health, Safety & Compliance:
    • Follow all site health, safety, and environmental procedures.
    • Assist in implementation of safe systems of work and permit requirements.
    • Attend toolbox talks, inductions, and safety briefings.
  • Stakeholder Support:
    • Assist with basic record keeping, including site diaries, check sheets, and inspection records.
    • Support preparation of handover information and asset data.
    • Learn how to read mechanical drawings and specifications.
  • Learning & Development:
    • Complete all apprenticeship training requirements and coursework.
    • Develop mechanical engineering knowledge and practical skills.
    • Work toward recognised vocational and/or academic qualifications.
    • Actively engage in mentoring and development reviews.

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

  • Essential GCSEs (or equivalent) in Maths and English at Grade 4/C or above.
  • Commitment to enrolling in and completing a recognised engineering apprenticeship (e.g. Level 3 or Level 4 Mechanical Engineering).
  • Demonstrable interest in mechanical engineering or construction, evidenced through coursework, projects, or hobbies.
  • Experience working as part of a team, for example through education, work experience, or extracurricular activities.
  • Desirable GCSE or equivalent in Science or Engineering-related subject.
  • Work experience or placements in engineering, construction, utilities, or maintenance.
  • Exposure to mechanical systems, such as pumps, engines, pipework, or machinery.
  • Experience keeping basic records or logs, such as checklists, timesheets, or reports.
