Role responsibilities

The purpose of the Project Manager (Rolling Stock) role is to deliver rolling stock related projects and implementing strategic initiatives related to rolling stock, in line with Welsh Government transport policy and strategy.

  • Act as the interface between the project’s client and the project by helping to define scope, providing instruction to the delivery team(s), and providing any clarification needed to ensure the organisation and client are kept informed of progress, that the project remains visible through effective reporting, and that there are no unplanned events.
  • Provide a professional and effective project management service by implementing effective project governance (including establishing and chairing technical working groups and executive steering groups), and providing regular, clear reporting and escalations, to ensure project progress is clearly communicated and any issues can be resolved effectively.
  • Manage the project budget by liaising with the appropriate Finance Business Partner and the Senior Project Manager, escalating any variances to ensure costs remain within the agreed budget.
  • Be involved in commercial aspects of the project(s) including the tender activity, contract management and contract review by actively participating in negotiations, monitoring contract performance, and reviewing risks to safeguard the projects financial and legal integrity to ensure that all commercial decisions align with the project goals.

Who we’re looking for

  • Hold a project management qualification such as APM or PRINCE2 or similar.
  • Proven experience of working on a variety of rolling stock related projects as a Project Manager, or similar role.
  • Experience of promoting cross-team collaboration, with a focus on building mutually beneficial networks and improving overall service delivery.
  • Demonstrable experience of managing a budget, including forecasting and monitoring spend.

Welsh Language Skills

The ability to speak/write Welsh would make a great addition to your application, but it is not essential for this role.
