Role Description The Occupational Health Advisor is a full-time, on-site role based in or around the network locations Sheffield/York/Newcastle with travel via rail on the network during working hours. This role is responsible for providing professional occupational health advice and support to managers and colleagues, with a focus on promoting health, wellbeing, and fitness for work within a safety-critical environment. Day-to-day activities include managing sickness absence cases, conducting health assessments, advising on workplace adjustments, and supporting return-to-work plans. The Occupational Health Advisor will collaborate with Health & Safety teams to ensure compliance with occupational health standards and legislation, contribute to risk assessments, and help develop health promotion initiatives. The role also involves maintaining accurate clinical records, preparing reports, and communicating recommendations clearly to stakeholders across the organization.

Qualifications

• Strong skills in Sickness Absence Management and Case Management to assess fitness for work, support return-to-work plans, and provide evidence-based recommendations.
• Expertise in Occupational Health and OHS to deliver clinical assessments, advise on workplace adjustments, and support health and wellbeing programs.
• Knowledge of Health & Safety principles and regulations, with the ability to integrate occupational health considerations into risk assessments and safety policies.
• Relevant professional qualification in Occupational Health Nursing, Occupational Health Practice, or a related healthcare discipline; registration with an appropriate professional body is highly beneficial.
• Experience in a safety-critical or transport environment is advantageous, along with familiarity with UK employment and health legislation.
• Strong communication, report-writing, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work collaboratively with managers, colleagues, and external providers.
• Proficient in maintaining confidential records, using relevant IT systems, and managing workloads independently in a busy operational setting.
