Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We are looking for a Waste Manager to join our team and help drive forward positive action across our service.

The Waste Manager role across Mid and South Essex hospitals is integral to sustainability, cost savings, and regulatory compliance, focusing on efficient waste segregation, recycling, and minimising landfill contributions.

This management is coordinated primarily within the Estates and Facilities teams, overseeing waste portering, engaging staff in recycling initiatives, and driving sustainable practices supported by NHS Net Zero commitment.

Main duties of the job

To assist with the current and future strategic planning/delivery of high quality MSE Waste and Grounds service with an efficient and cost effective approach that meets the need of all clients/stakeholders. The post holder will liaise with multi-disciplinary colleagues to ensure the continuity and development of the service.

This role will also include monitoring all waste & grounds services against national standards and performance, ensuring budget management against resource allocation, budget forecast and delivery of quality service within budget.

The post holder will also be responsible for planning and organising the MSE waste and grounds service provision, including the development of appropriate plans and strategies for responding to changes in service requirements, national standards and objectives, etc.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Specialist knowledge of waste & grounds service procedures and practices, underpinned by professional hotel services or business management knowledge to degree level or qualified by experience
  • Any waste management qualification.
  • Qualification for waste management (CIWM)

Experience

  • Experience of waste management in a large organisation
  • Experience of change management
  • Experience and knowledge of budget management on a large scale; ensuring prudent budget management and effective commercial financial decisions
  • Previous experience of overall responsibility for a waste service function in an NHS or private medical/ care setting
  • Experience of dealing with external contractors
