Job overview

The post holder will join the 200-strong Advanced Clinical Practitioner workforce at Nottingham University Hospital NHS Trust, and will be based atCity campus within theSexual Health service.

The role involves daytime work only Monday -Friday, with occasional Saturday clinic cover possible.

The trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (tACP) will develop specialist knowledge and skills to provide healthcare autonomously to patients in their specialty through an established ACP training pathway.

Main duties of the job

Whilst in training the trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner (tACP) will undertake the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice as an apprentice; included in the curriculum are non-medical prescribing and work-based learning modules. As well as the academic pathway the tACP will follow the three year consultant-supported ACP training program mapped against established national and regional competencies. The tACP will gain the skills under direct supervision to undertake clinical assessment, diagnosis and treatment of patients with undiagnosed and undifferentiated conditions. In addition to this the tACP will also be trained in the referral of patients to relevant specialities for any necessary investigations as well as facilitating safe patient discharge. The tACP will develop advanced skills in clinical decision making, critical thinking, and clinical management skills based upon evidence based practice

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Year 1: Work within the trainee’s appropriate role in the department e.g. nurse/ physiotherapist/ pharmacist. If the trainee’s base profession is not nurse, a proportion of these shifts will be working directly alongside departmental nurses. The trainee is released 1 day a week to complete module 1 and 2 of the MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice and also given rostered time for preparation study.

Year 2: Following successful completion of module 1 and 2 the trainee commences as a full-time supernumerary tACP and starts the work-based learning and non-medical prescribing modules. Supernumerary trainees will have dedicated consultant supervision time, consultant competency sign off, ACP mentorship and structured teaching; allowing completion of the work based learning competency portfolio. Upon completion of this, they will plan their final assessment and transition onto the rota with a supervisory period. If the MSc is undertaken at a non-affiliated HEI, submission of a completed NUH ACP competency portfolio remains an essential element of the training pathway.

Year 3: Completion of the final assessments.

At the end of an agreed period of training and if all requirements are met, including successful completion of the MSc, the trainee ACP will advance into a substantive AfC band 8a Advanced Clinical Practitioner post.

Training and Qualifications

  • Current registration with professional body (e.g. NMC, HCPC) with ability to undertake non-medical prescribing
  • UK degree at minimum 2:2, or degree with statement of comparability at level 6 or 7 (UK ENIC) if undertaken at a non-UK HEI
  • GCSE grade A* – C in Maths and English or Functional Skills Level 2 Maths and English
  • STIF advanced
  • MSC in Advanced practice or working towards
  • DFSRH
  • LoC IUT and SDI
  • Faculty Registered Trainer for Sexual Health
  • Non medical prescriber

Experience

  • Minimum 4 years post-registration experience
  • Minimum 2 years clinical work in a Sexual Health setting
  • Minimum 1 year working at AfC Band 6 or above
  • Evidence of continued professional development
  • Evidence of teaching, supervision and assessment skills
  • Evidence of conflict management skills
  • Ability to work within a multi-professional team
  • Assertiveness skills and the ability to deal with interpersonal conflict
  • Ability to adapt communication to a wide variety of patient abilities/needs and deal with potentially difficult or distressing situations effectively
  • Communication skills that facilitate building honest and trusting partnerships with patients

  • Ability to respond to, prioritise and analyse health conditions and ensure effective interventions are actioned in a timely manner

Salary: The quoted salary will be on a pro rata basis for part time workers.
