Job overview:

We have an exciting opportunity for a Diabetes Specialist Dietitian to join our team at Epsom and St Helier University Hospital Trust. The postholder would work within the diabetes multidisciplinary team being responsible for the dietetic management of adult diabetes patients, working alongside 2 other WTE Diabetes Specialist Dietitians. The post holder will work within outpatients, providing dietetic care via one-to-one clinics, MDT clinics and Type 1 diabetes group education.

Our multidisciplinary diabetes service includes the provision of Type 1 diabetes care, multidisciplinary clinics including insulin pump therapy and diabetes technology, antenatal diabetes service, and Type 1 structured education including carbohydrate counting group education.

We are looking for a Dietitian with strong communication skills, ability to work autonomously, enthusiasm for patient group education with a passion for Diabetes. The post holder will have opportunities to contribute to the continuing development of the service.

Main duties of the job:

  • Working within the multidisciplinary team to deliver evidence based diabetes dietetic education to our patients.
  • Working in line with HCPC code of practice.
  • To work both as an autonomous practitioner and within the multidisciplinary team.
  • To be a specialist involved in the development of the diabetes dietetic service; whilst contributing to the development of the diabetes service.
  • Provide expert dietetic advice to the multidisciplinary team through attendance and participation in multidisciplinary team meetings, educational meetings and clinical governance meetings.
  • Ability to utilise developed communication and teaching skills to educate the diverse and multicultural diabetes population with barriers to understanding the essential, highly complex carbohydrate counting principles and dietetic education both on a one-to-one basis and in groups.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

The Diabetes Specialist Dietitian is a member of the diabetes team responsible for the nutrition and dietetic management of all adult diabetes patients under the care of the specialist diabetes team. The post holder will assume the role of nutrition educator to student dietitians, medics, nursing staff, dietetic assistants and other AHPs as required. Internally, the post holder will develop effective working relationships with other dietitians in this area, Adult Dietetic Manager, office support staff, nursing staff, medical staff, patients and relatives. Externally this includes patients, relatives and other relevant clinical staff.

Person specification:

Qualifications:

  • BSc Nutrition and Dietetics or equivalent
  • Insulin pump experience including support insulin pump and technology education

Experience & Knowledge:

  • Broad theoretical and practical experience of dietetics
  • Able to work as an autonomous practitioner
  • Evidence of completion of clinical audit
  • Evidence of professional development
  • Experience of providing patient and professional education
  • Experience of delivering care to people with diabetes in clinical settings
  • Excellent general dietetic knowledge and knowledge of food components with an ability to translate this into practical advice for people
  • Development of resources for people with diabetes
  • Experience of CSII, CGM
  • Experience of research

Skills:

  • Highly developed written & oral communication skills
  • Able to organize and prioritize own caseload, ensuring safe practice
  • Able to organize and share complex information in relation to clinical and non-clinical work
  • Knowledge & awareness of diversity and human rights
  • Ability to communicate effectively to ensure high standards of care, treatment, service or support
