Job overview

The Stroke service provides a 24 hour, 7 day a week service for thrombolysis (giving ‘clot-busting’ drugs to open up blocked arteries causing stroke) and mechanical thrombectomy. This is a regional service so we also accept patients from local hospitals who do not provide thrombolysis outside normal working hours.

The stroke service has two wards:

•20 bed Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU / William Drummond Ward) which gives immediate care for patients who have a suspected stroke in SW London

•Stroke Unit for local patients (SU / Thomas Young Ward) – 16 beds

The Stroke service has nine consultants and a multi-disciplinary staff including specialist therapists and nurses.

The Sentinel Stroke National Audit Programme (SSNAP) is a major national healthcare quality improvement programme based in the School of Population Health and Environmental Studies at King’s College London. SSNAP measures the quality and organisation of stroke care in the NHS and is the single source of stroke data in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.

As a member of the Stroke Audit Team, the post holder will help facilitate the collection and inputting of data for all patients that attend the Hyper Acute Stroke Unit and Stroke Unit at St George’s University Hospital.

Main duties of the job

  1. Ensuring all patients admitted to the Trust with a stroke diagnosis are captured on the SSNAP database in the appropriate time frame.
  2. Maintaining spreadsheets that contain clinical and personal information relating to a patients stroke care.
  3. Prioritise daily tasks and ongoing workloads – and complete in agreed time frames as determined by the clinical team and Stroke Audit Team Lead.
  4. Working closely with Stroke Physicians, Nurses and Therapists to improve data quality.
  5. Liaison with external hospitals and SSNAP teams for data transfers.
  6. Assist in achieving the required Case Ascertainment and Audit Compliance targets set by SSNAP, through the safe/accurate/prompt storage of data.
  7. Develop and continue to enhance understanding of the stroke pathway at St. Georges by periodically attending acute thrombolysis and thrombectomy calls, attending thrombectomy procedures, MDT and handover on HASU and TYW.
  8. Attend weekly SSNAP team meeting with clinical lead for SSNAP (and periodically with Assistant Service Manager).
  9. Support stroke audit and research within the Stroke team (and other relevant departments) at St. George’s.
  10. Attend SSNAP webinars regarding any relevant topics/data-set updates.

Working for our organisation

St George’s, Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals and Health Group cares for a population of four million people in South West London and North East Surrey. Our sites include St George’s Hospital, one of 11 major trauma centres in the UK and the largest healthcare provider and major teaching hospital in the area; St Helier Hospital, home to the South West Thames Renal and Transplantation Unit and Queen Mary’s Hospital for Children; and Epsom Hospital, home to the South West London Elective Orthopaedic Centre (SWLEOC).

After years of collaboration, our two Trusts became a hospitals group in 2021. While remaining as two separate Trusts, being a hospitals group will help us to collaborate more closely on research, and the development, education, and training of our 17,000-strong workforce.
