The service supports a range of state-of-the-art radiotherapy equipment that includes four Elekta linear accelerators (with SGRT and FFF capability), a Philips wide-bore CT-scanner, Elekta Monaco treatment planning system, utilising image fusion (ProSoma), auto segmentation and adaptive techniques (Mirada and AutoContour), and a well-developed oncology information management system (MOSAIQ), all deployed in a Citrix environment to provide electronic access across the South-West Wales region and facilitate complete remote and paperless working. The service supports a flexible approach, including working-from-home, unsociable hours and weekend working.

Treatment plans are prepared for a number of clinical trials and clinical sites using techniques that include IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, 4DCT and 4DCBCT and SGRT. The Cancer Centre is undergoing an equipment refresh, replacing our four linear accelerators, a dedicated new CT scanner and replacing our treatment planning system. The SWWCC has an ongoing collaboration agreement with Elekta to advance the next generation of radiotherapy workflow management software tools, keeping us at the forefront of developments.

Main duties of the job

As required, you will undertake various tasks independently and without supervision within treatment planning and Mould Room areas. You are expected to take responsibility for some areas of the service and, with increasing experience, develop a more profound and more specialised knowledge of a subset of the defined tasks within Radiotherapy Physics Services.

You will be responsible with technologists, physicists and other planning group members for preparing treatment plans for patients undergoing radiotherapy. The duties will include operating computer systems for treatment plans, organ-at-risk delineation and performing calculations relating to patient doses. Within the Mould Room, you will have direct contact with patients and work with oncologists and radiographers to produce individualised immobilisation devices. The post holder will also undertake measurement of radiation beams from the linear accelerators to verify treatment delivery accuracy.

You will be involved in undertaking and supervising clinical developments within the department through the introduction of new techniques. You will be responsible for supervising, teaching and training other staff and students within the department.

Qualified Radiotherapy Physics Technologists/Dosimetrists and Radiographers with treatment planning experience are encouraged to apply.

Essential Qualifications & Knowledge

  • Bachelor’s degree in an appropriate biological or physical science or technology-based discipline or degree from the College of Radiographers or equivalent
  • Appropriate postgraduate diploma or equivalent experience
  • Registration as a Radiotherapy Physics Clinical Technologist or Therapy Radiographer
  • Contemporary specialist working knowledge of the Radiotherapy Physics Technologist
  • Broad knowledge of radiotherapy techniques and clinical applications
  • Appreciation of relevant legislation, standards, and other guidelines for clinical practice and professional standards
  • Understands and is committed to continuing professional development
  • To recognise own boundaries and seek advice and support when necessary
  • Bachelor’s degree with a strong medical physics component
  • Clinical experience and competency in Radiotherapy in a range of mould room / treatment planning techniques
  • Experience of advanced planning techniques e.g. IMRT/VMAT
  • Practical experience of measurement and/or general technology in the physical or biological sciences
