Job overview

Applications are invited for the post of Senior Clinical Fellow in ENT for a fixed term period of 12 months.

We are looking to appoint an innovative and high performing individual to join our ENT team. We are an enthusiastic department, keen to encourage personal and professional development. There is a requirement for on-call duties 1:7 rota.

We can provide subspecialisation in Otology / Implant Surgery, Rhinology (including Septo-rhinoplasty) and Head and Neck Surgery (malignant and benign) dependent on the needs of the successful candidate. The timetable will be adapted appropriately. Whilst working alongside the ENT senior team, there will also be plenty of opportunity for the successful candidate to improve both clinical and surgical skills and they will be encouraged to be involved in clinical audit, quality improvement and research work.

Main duties of the job

This post will be for the duration of 12 months to cover maternity leave. The job will be similar to that of our training grade senior specialty registrars. The post will be suitable for a trainee who is accredited and wishes to further enhance their clinical skills in a specialist area of otorhinolaryngology-head and neck surgery (ORL-HNS).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

There is ample opportunity for the post holder to develop further skills in head and neck surgery. Bradford is an accredited cancer centre in the Yorkshire Cancer Network and serves a patient population of about 1 million for head and neck services. A neck lump clinic is established with over 1000 new referrals seen annually. In addition the bulk of malignant and endocrine thyroid and parathyroid surgery is performed in the ORL-HNS unit at Bradford.

Rhinology, Facial Plastics

The ORL-HNS unit perform the majority of rhinoplasty surgery for Bradford. In addition there will be opportunity for the post holder to observe facial plastic procedures subject to arrangement with consultants from the Plastic Surgery department at BTHT.

There will be ample opportunity to gain experience in rhinology and there are over 200 endoscopic sinus surgery procedures performed annually including frontal sinus surgery.

Otology

The ORL-HNS unit at BTHT offer a supra-regional cochlear implant service with over 100 implants performed per year. A wide range of otological conditions are seen and over 100 mastoid procedures are performed annually.

  • All applicants to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues demonstrated by one of the following: – that applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English; or – have achieved the following scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) in a single sitting within 24 months at time of application – Overall 7, Speaking 7, Listening 7, Reading 7, Writing 7. IELTS certificate to be presented at interview. If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of these examples they must provide supporting evidence
  • Interest in teaching and management

  • Understanding of equality and diversity issues and how this affects patients, visitors and staff
  • Understanding of what the NHS Constitution means to you, and your responsibilities to the public, patients and colleagues.

Qualifications

  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies by the time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice
  • Evidence of achievement of ST1 / CT1 competencies in the specialty at time of application and likelihood of achieving ST2 / CT2 competences in specialty by the start date of the post [In some specialties this level of specialty or core training may not provide the right skills to perform effectively in a specialty doctor post].
  • Specialty specific requirements eg MRCP, FRCS, etc where appropriate
