An exciting opportunity has arisen for an enthusiastic and motivated individual to join the Microbiology department at Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust as a Band 8a Microbiology Laboratory Manager. As a state registered Biomedical Scientist, the post holder will be responsible for leading the Microbiology service and will work closely with other members of the Microbiology leadership team and Head of Pathology to deliver a quality driven, patient focused service.
Following a joint procurement exercise as part of the South 6 Pathology Network, a managed service contract is soon to be implemented and the department will benefit from new equipment. Situated in modern facilities which provide the space and capacity to expand. A well-developed quality management system is in place and the laboratory is UKAS accredited and IBMS registered for training. The department has three laboratory areas and a category 3 facility. We currently offer an on call service overnight and run a separately staffed respiratory virus testing service overnight 7 days a week. The department is well respected within the hospital and maintains an excellent relationship with primary care.
Main duties of the job
Training and education are actively supported, and the laboratory is an IBMS registered training laboratory. Regular teaching, training and CPD activities are encouraged together with clinical governance meetings and regular staff feedback. This is a department and service that offers excellent opportunities for someone who would like to use their initiative, experience and strategic view to develop the service. Working with others as part of the Pathology management team, the successful candidate will make a positive, significant contribution to shaping a well-respected and proactive service.

Person specification
- BSc Hons Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
- State Registration as Biomedical Scientist with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Healthcare related MSc/Specialist Higher Degree in Management or equivalent experience
- Documented evidence of Continuing Professional Development
Experience
- Experience of working with senior healthcare professionals
- Experience of human resource and financial management
- Experience of managing change
- Significant demonstrable experience of departmental management including maintaining good relationships with clinicians, finance, and general management
- Experience as internal consultant working with multi-disciplinary teams to achieve major change
Knowledge and skills
- Excellent operational and process management expertise
- Knowledge of financial reporting, analysis, and budgetary management
- Highly developed theoretical and practical knowledge of at least one or more services (bacteriology, virology or mycology)
- Knowledge of regulations and legislation relevant to pathology and the requirements of national organisations involved with pathology
- Aware of impact of national NHS strategies on future of pathology service delivery
- Knowledge of the NHS environment and the modernisation agenda
- Able to formulate and implement service plans for the development of a department within Pathology
- Well-developed interpersonal skills and ability to influence colleagues
