Job overview

University Hospitals of Derby and Burton NHS Foundation Trust is looking for an experienced HCPC registered prosthetist to join the dynamic amputee rehabilitation team based in Derby on a secondment basis for 12 months.

The role will involve working with your own complex clinical case load and therefore clinical expertise in at least one area of prosthetics is essential. You will undertake true MDT working, supported by a consultant, specialist physiotherapists, specialist occupational therapists, and administrative support and a team of on-site prosthetic technicians. You will be involved with pre-amputation assessment, Primary patient MDT consultation and lifelong prosthetic provision, collaborating with the whole team to provide holistic solutions across the range of amputation levels and congenital limb difference. The role holder will be an integral member of the senior clinical team and will work closely with the clinical lead Prosthetist with the opportunity to be involved in research, audit and governance for the service, driving development and quality of service provision.

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for all aspects of prosthetics patient care for their own caseload.
  • Make clinical decisions regarding the patients\’ lifelong care. Plan, evaluate, implement and develop patient care.
  • Accountable for the completed manufactured device.
  • Responsible for identifying the changing needs of the patient.
  • Responsible for referring patients to a medical clinic.
  • Responsible for referring to the prosthetics clinic.
  • Responsible for seeking advice/guidance from Prosthetist colleagues, Medical colleagues, or Therapy colleagues.
  • Responsible and accountable for identifying, requesting and supervising technical staff support when dealing directly with patients.
  • Communicate and provide professional advice as required to patients, carers, referrers and appropriate individuals in the MDT.
  • Participate in service development, clinical governance, audit and research
  • To supervise and assist junior members of staff.
  • Undertake CPD in accordance with British Association of Prosthetists and Orthotists Best Practice guidelines and Rehabilitation Engineering Services/Division policy.
  • Identify your own training and educational needs and to seek out appropriate courses
  • Responsible for keeping up to date with clinical and technical techniques.
  • To co-ordinate and deliver training and education to medical postgraduates, other staff and placement students.
  • To ensure compliance and implementation with Trust policies and procedures such as Quality Control and Health & Safety

Person specification

Knowledge

  • Degree or Diploma in Prosthetics and Orthotics or Prosthetics
  • HCPC Registered as a Prosthetist
  • Detailed knowledge of current and emerging prosthetic products and technologies.
  • Knowledge of how to contribute to the clinical education and development of junior staff, students, and assistants
  • Understanding of clinical governance principles (including H&S aspects relating to Prosthetics) and the ability to contribute to quality improvement

Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in measuring, fitting, assessing and evaluating the function of a broad range of bespoke and stock protheses
  • Experience in managing a complex caseload for both clinical and manufacturing purposes, involving various age groups
  • Experience working effectively within a multidisciplinary team as well as autonomously
  • Minimum of three years in clinical prosthetics practice after qualification

Communication

  • Demonstrates the ability to work collaboratively with other professionals and build strong working relationships
  • Ability to communicate with people that may have memory problems or communication difficulties (for example patients with physical disabilities, mental disability, mental health issues)
  • Understands and has experience of clearly explaining treatment solutions to patients as well and how to use the device, and provide training
