University Hospitals Plymouth is looking to recruit a motivated, dedicated and dynamic Band 6 SLT (0.49WTE / 18.35 hours per week) to join our friendly adult acute in-patients team of Speech and Language Therapists and to contribute to the provision of a high quality service to adult in-patients at Derriford Hospital. You will have excellent communication, organisation, leadership and interpersonal skills as well as having a good knowledge base in the assessment and management of in-patients with dysphagia and communication impairment.
The post holder will be a senior member of the in-patient SLT team, will lead day to day caseload prioritisation and will supervise more junior therapists and students. We are committed to work based learning, education and training to improve clinical and leadership skills and we actively encourage supervision, CPD and audit.
Main duties of the job:
- To independently manage a caseload of in-patients with complex communication and swallowing difficulties, including tracheostomised patients.
- To be responsible for training and advising patients, carers, professionals, and non-professionals how to support complex speech, language, communication and swallowing difficulties in relation to caseload.
- To clinically supervise and appraise identified junior staff.
- To provide second opinions to less experienced SLTs in the team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- To be responsible for prioritisation, assessment, diagnosis, and development of specialised treatment programmes and discharge for personal/shared caseload for inpatients.
- To undertake a range of formal and informal assessments, including risk analysis of swallowing, understanding and use of voice and communication.
- To participate in the examination with radiology colleagues and to jointly interpret results in order to plan appropriate SLT treatment.
- To be responsible for ensuring patients’ safety with regard to eating and drinking by assessing, monitoring and updating, and communicating details of safe practice.
- To identify, collect, analyse, and interpret complex case related information and data from patients, carers and other relevant sources in order to reach an accurate diagnosis.
Person specification:
- Proven evidence of extensive demonstrable experience in relevant area of clinical practice – communication and swallowing disorders in a range of acquired disorders.
- Proven evidence of teaching / demonstrable presentation experience.
- Demonstrable experience in audit and research.
- Demonstrable experience of working with tracheostomy patients.
Qualifications:
- Specialist graduate level education in speech and language therapy.
- Post-graduate accredited dysphagia training as evidenced through competencies.
- Membership of RCSLT.
Aptitude and Abilities:
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
- Proven evidence of leadership ability.
- Ability to motivate and inspire patients and colleagues.
