An exciting opportunity has arisen to join the Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist team at George Eliot Hospital. The Haematology team is a dynamic, supportive and friendly multi-disciplinary team dedicated to providing holistic, patient-centred care. We are therefore looking for a highly motivated and dynamic individual who is committed to providing the highest standard of nursing support and care to both inpatient and outpatients. Any applicants must have knowledge and experience in haematology and chemotherapy and possess excellent communication skills.

Main duties of the job:

  • Working as part of a multi-professional team to deliver enhanced clinical practice to a specific group and participate in education, audit and application of evidence-based practice within the specialty.
  • The successful candidate will provide a comprehensive specialist support service to patients/families with a suspected or proven haematological disorder.
  • You will act as the key worker for patients with a haematological diagnosis offering expert care, advice, support and developing holistic plans of care.
  • Excellent communication skills are an essential skill for this position alongside the ability to act as your patients' advocate and liaise with other healthcare professionals, ensuring coordination and continuity of care.
  • Your role will be an integral part of the Haematology team, and you will be expected to contribute to educational sessions and MDT meetings on a regular basis.
  • It is important to show commitment and demonstrate evidence of ongoing professional and academic development.
  • You will be encouraged to expand your knowledge, skills and competencies within a supported and friendly environment with training opportunities available to support you along the way.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:

  • Carry out programmes of care and treatment with the support of the Senior Haematology Clinical Nurse Specialist.
  • Influence and monitor the standards of direct haematology patient care delivery in accordance with best practice, operational protocols and guidelines.
  • Manage clinical caseload on a day-to-day basis including making minor modifications within prescribed parameters reporting back to the lead clinician.
  • Deliver education programmes to patients, carers and other nursing staff as agreed by the senior haematology clinical nurse specialist.
  • Act as a role model, providing advice and specialist knowledge to other nursing/medical staff caring for patients/clients within the speciality.
  • Participate in research and audit as part of the multi-professional team within the speciality.
  • Ensure that high-quality data is collected for both audit and research trials as required.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, patients and other users of the Trust.
  • Provide written communications that are clear, fluent, concise and easily understood.
  • Under supervision and guidance provide ongoing support and management strategies to patients within the haematology service.
  • Ensure current registration with NMC.
  • Liaise with Consultants, Ward/Department Team/Matrons/Multi-Disciplinary Team and other Wards and Departments as appropriate to ensure patients receive optimum care.

Person specification:

  • 2 years at Band 5 or equivalent
  • Experience within the speciality
  • Evidence of continuing professional development

  • Willing to work towards a post-grad qualification within the speciality

Other:

  • Able to deal with patients and relatives during distressing situations on a frequent basis.
