The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking to recruit an experienced client facing Senior Project Manager (construction) to work within the award winning Capital and Planning Section of the Estates Department. The role will provide lead PM services to deliver capital construction and major refurbishment projects within the Trust's acute building stock to the highest standard. The successful candidate must be able to demonstrate a track record of client-side delivery covering all RIBA stages on major schemes. The Estates Department has an exciting and ambitious Estates Strategy and this senior role is pivotal to its successful delivery.
Extensive knowledge and experience of the development of capital schemes from inception to in-use is required with the ability to manage construction professionals and Trust stakeholders engaged in the design & construction process. Knowledge and experience of the NEC3/4 suite of contracts and the green book 5 case business model is required. Candidates should demonstrate experience in commercial awareness and understanding of procurement routes to market including good governance arrangements.
Main duties of the job:
- The ability to effectively manage construction contractors and design professionals to ensure projects are delivered within the parameters of time, cost and quality is a fundamental requirement.
- The successful candidate must have the skills, drive and determination to deliver the provision of world class clinical services to achieve the Trust's vision and standard of care.
- Educated to Master’s level (or equivalent experience) and Chartered membership of a recognised professional body, you will demonstrate a proven track record of scheme delivery within or without the NHS.
- The successful candidates will form part of a multi-disciplinary Capital Team, reporting into the Assistant Director of Estates (Strategy, Planning & Capital Development) for overall programme delivery.
- Direct line management of Project Managers and Clerk of Works within the Capital Structure forms part of this role.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- To commission and Project Manage Major Capital new works Projects on behalf of the Trust.
- Provision of specialist Expert professional advice to all major specialist projects.
- Work with others to ensure affordable capital programmes consistent with business priorities.
- Lead and manage a team of multi-disciplinary staff in the procurement of capital schemes.
- Provide professional project management and financial advice to ensure projects are procured to correct specification, on time and within budget.
- Manage a variety of Building and Engineering schemes which involve multi-disciplinary teams that include External engaged consultants, contractors and Specialist Services.
A proven track record of scheme delivery within or without the NHS is expected to be demonstrated. The successful candidate will form part of a multi-disciplinary Capital Team, reporting into the Trust Capital Projects Manager responsible for overall programme delivery. This senior post will be the lead role for the conception, planning and management of the Trust capital schemes giving professional specialist advice to other Senior Estates and staff members of the Trust.
Person specification:
Knowledge:- An in-depth knowledge of building techniques, procurement routes, contract management, design processes and major programmes of work.
- Excellent financial management skills in relation to the delivery of capital projects.
- An in-depth understanding of the physical healthcare environment as reflected in relevant policies and procedures (e.g. HTM and HBN).
- An understanding of engineering services in major capital schemes and preferably in the acute healthcare environment.
- Building Information Management systems.
- Good knowledge of building and planning legislation applicable to the NHS environment.
- Excellent communication skills both oral and written.
- Excellent planning and organisational skills to develop programmes of work and manage against them.
- Well developed team leadership and change management skills.
- Working use of CAD systems.
- Have extensive experience in the design, construction and project management of major building projects.
- Have experience of working in an acute healthcare setting.
- Minimum graduate level with master’s degree or equivalent level qualifications / experience.
- Membership of a recognised professional body.
- PRINCE2 Practitioner or equivalent.
