Job overview

An exciting opportunity has arisen within South West London Pathology based Cellular Pathology at St Georges hospital. We are looking for a highly motivated medical secretary to ensure the provision of comprehensive secretarial and administrative support at a senior level to the Consultant body, Clinical Fellows, Registrars and Advanced Practitioners in the Cellular Pathology Department.

Main duties of the job

Main Duties/Key Results Areas: Focusing, where possible, on outcomes qualitative as well as quantitative.

The following responsibilities are common to all posts in the Trust and should be included at some point in the job description.

  • To support the Cellular Pathology medical and non-medical staff in the delivery of a high quality diagnostic service.
  • To provide efficient and high quality secretarial and administrative support to the Cellular Pathology consultant team; including all non-medical and junior medical staff.
  • To provide administrative/secretarial support for the perinatal service during periods of high activity and cover in the absence of the perinatal secretary.
  • To work in close co-operation with staff and other health professionals to ensure a first class service.

Qualifications

  • Good general education including GSCE in Maths or English and A-levels (or equivalent)
  • Typing speed of 40 WPM minimum
  • RSA III or equivalent, or equivalent skills and experience
  • Customer Care course (or equivalent experience)

Experience

  • Secretarial / Administration experience of which at least 2 years should have been spent as a medical secretary
  • Experience of working within a hospital
  • Experience in establishing/maintaining robust office systems
  • Experience of working with patients with complex needs
  • Experience of working with different professional groups

Skills

  • Ability to work unsupervised
  • Computer/word processing skills including use of email (eg ability to create directories, documents, mail merge, etc.)
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Ability to use iCLIP and the Electronic Patient Record (EPR) or equivalent
  • Ability to use Excel / Powerpoint / Access
