We are seeking a Medical Equipment Service Technician to join the Biomedical Engineering Department predominantly working within the electronics workshop. You will join an enthusiastic department that provides a Medical Equipment Management service for the Trust.
The post involves working closely with other healthcare professionals in providing corrective/planned maintenance, medical device training and the calibration of a wide range of medical equipment.
You should be qualified to a relevant degree or equivalent in engineering discipline or equivalent level of knowledge gained through experience/vocational training. You should also have good knowledge in fault-finding electrical/electronic equipment. Good communication skills are essential.

Main duties of the job:
- You will be part of the team managing the Trust’s large stock of medical equipment.
- The specialties covered include: x-ray equipment, pathology laboratory equipment, audiology, neuroscience, renal dialysis and anaesthetic equipment as well as the full range of patient related monitoring and therapeutic equipment found in the Trust’s wards, intensive cares and theatres.
- The main tasks of the post holder are to maintain the equipment in all parts of the hospital, carry out planned preventative maintenance and to test and calibrate the medical equipment.
- They should work unsupervised, and exercise the initiative and responsibility required to maintain complex systems and equipment in the optimum functional state.
- The person will need to exhibit a “can do” attitude and be flexible in their attitude to work.
- To advise and help the other members of the department as necessary.
- The role involves working in both the Mechanical and Electronic sections of the department maintaining a wide range of equipment including beds, suction and flow meters, infusion devices, lab equipment, theatre equipment, blood gas monitors and patient monitoring.
- To provide clinical technical services for preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection and repair to a wide range of complex and patient-critical medical equipment.
- To work in close co-operation with clinical staff to plan planned preventative maintenance and servicing of the medical equipment.

Knowledge and Understanding:
- Science, Biomedical Engineering, electronics degree or equivalent level of knowledge and experience.
- Training in the use and maintenance of a range of medical equipment.
- Registration as a Clinical Technologist with The Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM).
Skills/Abilities:
- Use an equipment management database to maintain asset register and record work done.
- Ability to perform logical troubleshooting and fault finding procedures.
- Use of fine tools for equipment adjustment/assembly.
- Able to deal with complex and unpredictable situations.
- Able to deliver teaching and training on basic equipment to other professional groups (e.g. train nurses in basic medical device use).
- Able to use Excel, Word etc. to set up documents and spreadsheets and extract information.
- Able to lift and move heavy equipment as part of servicing.
Experience/Knowledge:
- Experience in applying workshop technology to patient-critical equipment and techniques in healthcare.
- Practical experience in electro medical engineering workshop practices and techniques, including preventative maintenance, servicing, inspection, repair, calibration, quality control, safety, acceptance testing and procurement.
- Experience of working in a hospital or similar environment.
- Knowledge of medical electronics, electro-mechanical systems, computing and medical device support.
- In-depth knowledge of medical device operation and management.
- General knowledge of electronic workshop practice and computer systems.
- Knowledge of Medical Equipment Electrical Safety.
- General knowledge of electrical and electronic engineering.
- Working in a department that has a quality management system in place (e.g. ISO9001).
- Knowledge of medical device integration or computer networks.
- Knowledge of Respiratory mechanical ventilation.
