Job overview: This is a 12 month locum post for a Consultant Haematologist to lead the Thrombosis service with an interest in Haemostasis. The appointee will be responsible for the development and maintenance of a high standard of practice of clinical and laboratory coagulation haematology. The post holder will be given the opportunity to lead the service with ample room for strategic direction and growth in clinical delivery, trials and research. We are open and keen to consider well trained and experienced international applicants with an interest in thrombosis and haemostasis.

The multidisciplinary team provide inpatient and outpatient care to patients with thrombosis alongside tertiary input to complex thrombotic patients across South London. The team provides a nurse led Ambulatory VTE pathway for patients referred from the Emergency Department. Additionally, the nursing team provide specialist Cancer Thrombosis clinics, and a joint thrombosis nurse/midwife led clinic for pregnant women requiring thromboprophylaxis. The Anticoagulation pharmacists provide 2 ambulatory services for newly diagnosed AF and LV thrombosis. The service is a designated VTE Exemplar Centre forming part of the National network participating in National Clinical governance programmes and the VTE buddy network. VTE prevention work forms an important part of our work. The anticoagulation service provides warfarin monitoring for over 700 patients and provides bridging clinics for surgery across the Trust.

Main duties of the job:

• To provide consultant input for clinical aspects of haemostasis and thrombosis working with both the anti-coagulation/thrombosis team and the haemophilia/haemostasis team.
• To lead the team with existing Haemostasis and thrombosis consultants to ensure readily available haematology expertise in the provision of laboratory haemostasis and thrombosis interpretation and management of pathology results.
• To assist in the development of anticoagulant and thrombosis services with the Anticoagulant team involving delivering education in the Trust and primary care to ensure compliance with National standards and improve patient safety.
• To support the implementation of National guidance on the prevention of hospital acquired venous thromboembolism, working with the Hospital Thrombosis team in development, dissemination and audit of best practice.
• To ensure provision of a high standard of practice of laboratory diagnostic haematology services in partnership with the South West London Pathology Network, working in conjunction with the other haematology consultants to ensure comprehensive cover for the laboratory.
• To provide clinical haematology services as part of the non-malignant haematology team working in conjunction with the other haematology consultants.
• To work with the laboratory manager, scientific team and clinical lead to ensure compliancy with CPA standards and are updated in line with current best practice.

Person specification:

• Qualifications and Training: MRCP (or equivalent), FRCPath in Haematology (or equivalent), Full and specialist registration (and a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC) (or eligible for registration within six months of interview).
• Applicants that are UK trained, must ALSO be a holder of a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or be within six months of award of CCT by date of interview.
• Applicants that are non-UK trained, will be required to show evidence of equivalence to the UK CCT.
• Experience of the full range of laboratory haematology disciplines with general haematology.
• Higher degree (e.g. MD, PhD) relevant to haematology, transplantation, or myeloma.
• Experience in diagnostic and clinical haematology.
• Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients with haematological conditions.
• Experience of clinical audit.
• Have 6 months experience working in a specialist haemostasis centre.

Knowledge / Management: FRCPath in Haematology, Knowledge of the processes and function of clinical governance, Evidence of CPD in non-malignant haematology.

Personal / Skills: Able to take responsibility, show leadership and make decisions, Have demonstrated an ability to work co-operatively with other colleagues and in multi-disciplinary teams.
