On 1st October 2019, Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust was created, through the merger of Aintree University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust and Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen University Hospitals NHS Trust. The newly formed Trust is responsible for managing services at Aintree University Hospital, Broadgreen Hospital, Liverpool Dental Hospital and the Royal Liverpool University Hospital. Bringing together a combined workforce of over 12,000 staff, the Trust has become the largest NHS employer in Merseyside and Cheshire. As well as providing general hospital services to the local population, the Trust provides a range of highly specialist services to more than two million people in the North West and beyond.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible and accountable for the assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of nursing care. Work as a member of the multi-disciplinary team and undertake delegated tasks from the ward manager/charge nurse. Following successful completion of foundation gateway will be required to take charge of ward/department for a span of duty. The post holder will always work within the NMC’s Code of Professional Conduct.

Clinical Responsibilities

  • Participate in maintaining a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for all patients and carers and maintain agreed standards of nursing care.
  • Determines nursing priorities and plans patient care.
  • Informs the nurse in charge when changes in circumstances may affect patient care.
  • Maintain nursing records in accordance with the NMC and Trust Guidelines.
  • Maintain and improve quality of patient care through contribution to the development of Essence of Care and clinical benchmarking within the unit.
  • Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients.
  • Providing information and support to patients/carers, and ensuring all those involved in the care are aware of changes in the patient’s condition.
  • Assist in the safe custody, checking and administration of drugs.
  • To undertake expanded practice, under supervision, in order to optimise patient care and in accordance with ward/department and Trust policies.
  • Involve patients and carers in the planning and delivering of care.
  • Ensure effective lines of communication within the ward/department multidisciplinary team.

Person specification

Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse, current NMC registration
  • Diploma in Nursing

Experience

  • Post registration experience and successful completion of band 5 foundation gateway competencies
  • Experience within relevant clinical setting
  • Evidence of maintaining a clinical learning environment
  • Evidence of working with students
  • Recent acute hospital experience (including as a student nurse)

Knowledge

  • Knowledge of current nursing issues and clinical governance
  • Demonstrates awareness of own limitations

Skills

  • Ability to organise workload and delegate tasks appropriately
  • Ability to work as part of a team
  • Ability to support less experienced staff
  • Ability to problem solve
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Basic IT skills, including e-mail and word processing
