Ward 6D is a 28 bedded respiratory ward in the new Royal building. Under the supervision and direction of a registered nurse, assisting the Ward/Department team in providing the highest possible standard of basic care for patients and their families/carers.
As Band 2 Health Care Assistant, duties will include:
- Supporting the registered nursing teams in providing patient care.
- Clinical duties such as assisting patients with extended personal hygiene needs.
- Meeting patients' nutritional needs, including completing risk assessments and implementing plans of care.
- Pressure area care.
We are looking for an enthusiastic and dynamic health care assistant who can demonstrate the trust values to join our team. This is a part-time job involving rotating and working days and night shifts.
Main duties of the job:
- Support all individuals through effective communication.
- General bed making/making up of clean beds in readiness for new admissions.
- Clear and clean vacated bed spaces and prepare ready for use according to the ward/unit protocol.
- Prepare used linen bags for collection by Porters and ensure adequate supply of linen bags/skips ready for use.
- Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment in all areas.
- Collection of blood products as required from laboratory.
- Safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps as per Trust policy.
- Be familiar with Trust policy and procedure for reporting clinical incidents.
- Provide support and assistance to new and junior members of staff.
- Support members of the nursing team in the management of abusive and aggressive behaviour with supervision.
- Contribute to the Health, Safety and Security of individuals.
Detailed job description and main responsibilities:
- Assist patients in meeting their hygiene needs and carry out all aspects of personal care and grooming.
- Provision of patients' toileting needs, ensuring privacy and dignity is maintained.
- Support of patients in managing incontinence.
- Measure patients' fluid intake and output using fluid balance charts and report information to Registered Nurse.
- Preparation and serving of patients' meals, drinks and snacks.
- Assisting/feeding patients as necessary.
- Assist patients in completing menu forms and liaise with the Catering Department regarding the number of meals needed.
- Report patients' dietary intake as indicated in the patients' plan of care.
- Carry out any movement and handling within the safe practice guidelines from mandatory training.
- Enable patients to maintain/improve their mobility by use of exercise and mobility appliances as directed by individual care plans.
- Assist in the prevention of pressure sore development as directed by the Registered Nurse.
- Obtain specimens from patients for ward or laboratory testing.
- Escort patients to clinical departments within the hospital.
- Assist Registered Nurse in performing last offices.
- General observations of patients, reporting anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff.
- Initiate Basic Life Support techniques as appropriate.
- Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and carers.
Person specification:
- Qualifications: Demonstrates a willingness & capability to undertake NVQ level 2.
- Experience: Previous experience in a caring role.
- Knowledge: Basic Computer Skills.
- Skills: Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues in the Healthcare setting.
- Other: Ability to communicate clearly in written & spoken word.
