Alternatively, EPA have a proven track record of “growing our own” Biomedical Scientist’s and this position is suitable for candidates that have an IBMS accredited degree and are seeking a laboratory based position to complete their registration portfolio for HCPC registration.

Working as part of the Eastern Pathology Alliance, based at the James Paget University Hospital (JPUH) Great Yarmouth, you will have the opportunity to work as part of a cutting edge Laboratory encompassing Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology, Transfusion and Andrology.

We are seeking a highly motivated and enthusiastic individual to join the Multidisciplinary Blood Science Spoke Laboratory at the JPUH. The successful candidate will ideally be multidisciplinary trained in Hematology, Blood Transfusion and Biochemistry. If you have an interest in training as a multidisciplinary Biomedical Scientist, we would welcome your application.

Knowledge of laboratory based computers, audits, SOPs, ISO standards and quality is a requirement. Essential qualities we require are an ability to work within a team, good communication skills, good technical proficiency and an ability to work unsupervised. You must be able to work under pressure and be able to meet deadlines, be flexible and adaptable and show that you are motivated and willing to develop your knowledge and skill.

Main duties of the job

You will be joining a friendly vibrant team in a recently refurbished laboratory. The Laboratory operates Abbott Alinity Haematology and Chemistry analysers, Werfen TOPS coagulation and Immucor NEO Blood Grouping analysers, with Grifols analysers currently under evaluation to replace the Neo’s in Transfusion.

You will support the delivery of a high quality, safe and compassionate healthcare service, all staff are expected to act as a role model to others in all aspects of their work and consistently demonstrate NNUH’s ‘PRIDE’ values of People focused, Respect, Dedication, Integrity and Excellence.

You will also be trained to a high standard in a multidisciplinary setting and would have the opportunity should it arise to work at other sites within EPA.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Communicates complex service related test information to managers, consultants, nurses, other health care colleagues, patients and patient carers.
  • Assists in managing and maintaining specialised databases in laboratory computer systems and patient storage databases.
  • Use research & development protocols on daily basis to provide statistical presentations of internal quality control (QC) to assess equipment performance in line with QC rules (e.g. Westgard).
  • Assist in the education and training of Medical staff, Clinical Scientists, other BMS, Trainee BMS, MLA’s and visiting students as required within their specialised area.
  • Provide safety supervision & training for junior members of staff and actively promote safe working practices in all areas of the laboratory service.

Our pathology department is part of the collaborative East Coast Pathology Network (see attached document).

Person specification

Qualifications

  • BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences or equivalent
  • State registration with Health Professions Council (HPC)
  • Competent in Blood Sciences services (Clinical Biochemistry, Haematology and Transfusion) to the level required for Band 5 staff. To be achieved within 6-12 months of starting post

Experience

  • Significant post State Registration in a clinical service as a new entrant BMS1 working in Blood Sciences

Skills

  • Understands basic clinical analyser performance evaluation to include complex instrumentation
  • Has a working knowledge of the assays performed within their service
  • Effective role model, demonstrating NNUH’s PRIDE values of People focussed, Respect, Integrity, Dedication and Excellence
  • Demonstrates understanding and commitment to Equality, Diversity and Inclusion
  • Has a working knowledge of relevant legislation and its application to the Directorate of Laboratory Medicine/Cellular Pathology

Travelling to work

Staff parking is available onsite; however, this is limited during core working hours. We have more capacity in the evening and at weekends and can usually provide spaces during those hours.

We look to allocate these spaces fairly. Our Travel Office have a set of criteria that staff must meet in order to qualify. If you qualify for a space, you may be placed on a waiting list if we are at full capacity.

The NNUH is served by a number of public buses, and we offer generously discounted monthly passes with First Bus & Konect.

The Costessey Park and Ride runs regularly each day from 06:30 (from P&R) to 20:45 (from NNUH) and this service is free for NHS staff. There is a regular Thickthorn P&R service as well which is free. Applications to the Travel Office are required for this service. We also have a discounted service from the airport P&R if you purchase a bundle. Please see Konect website for further details.

The NNUH host multiple bicycle racks and a salary sacrifice scheme. We also benefit from a Beryl station onsite.
