An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Frimley Park Hospital as the Lead Midwife for Patient Safety. As part of this full-time permanent opportunity, you will work within the Clinical Governance Team.

This role is a clinical split:

  • 20% of time will be spent in the clinical area, with responsibility for shift management of the labour ward or the maternity ward area.
  • 80% of time will be spent undertaking risk management duties.

The purpose of this role is to provide strategic and operational leadership for patient safety within maternity services. The post holder will lead the implementation of the Patient Safety Incident Response Framework (PSIRF), ensuring the service moves beyond traditional risk management toward a proactive, systems-based learning culture. The post holder will ensure the service meets all national safety requirements (CQC, MIS and MNSI), while maintaining clinical credibility through active shift coordination.

Main duties of the job

  • Safety leadership: Chair of the Maternity Patient Safety Group and lead investigator for complex clinical incidents.
  • Compliance: Primary lead for evidencing Safety Actions 1 and 10 of the Maternity Incentive Scheme (MIS).
  • Culture: Champion of a 'Just Culture', ensuring psychological safety for staff and transparency for service users.
  • Equity: Monitoring safety outcomes to reduce health inequalities in line with MBRRACE-UK findings.

Person specification

  • Qualifications: Registered Midwife currently on NMC register, Mentorship/PSPA/SLIP or equivalent, Evidence of CPD, Diploma in Clinical Risk management or other relevant study, Leadership/management training.
  • Experience: Experience of managing a ward area/or labour ward, Experience of clinical audit/quality issues within the health care setting, Experience in guideline development and implementation, Experience of implementing and influencing clinical governance processes, Experience of undertaking midwifery research, Able to demonstrate successful change management and innovation.
  • Skills & Knowledge: Interpersonal skills.
