An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Lead Nurse Specialist Practitioner to join the Royal Free London NHS Foundation Trust Breast services (RFL). We are looking for an innovative and transformational leader, who is seeking to further their nursing career within breast services. The expectations of the post will be demonstrated across the four pillars of consultant level practice: expert advanced clinical practice, strategic and enabling leadership, learning, developing and improving across the system, research and innovation.

The role is pivotal to working collaboratively with the MDT team, in building capacity and expanding the nurse led services to further shape and deliver the strategic vision of a world class Breast Service for our local population. RFL Breast services delivers a wide range of diagnostic and treatment options across the patient pathway for benign and malignant breast conditions. The range of services includes breast screening, breast pain, family history and genetics and plastic reconstructive surgery. The service provides comprehensive treatment options for advanced and metastatic cancer patients and is committed to supporting research and evidence-based treatments in line with both local and national policies. The successful applicant should have broad experience which includes managing patients receiving systemic anti-cancer therapy.

Main duties of the job

  • To practice at an advanced level consistent with the standards and competencies outlined by the Nursing and Midwifery Council and Health Education England.
  • To provide clinical leadership for and line manage a team of nurses and have the required knowledge and skills to deliver specialist breast nursing care in line with individual needs of patients and their families, and to be able to provide expert clinical advice both internally and externally.
  • To lead and participate in the case management of patients, support of integrated care and transfer to other environments.
  • To ensure the safe and effective delivery of high-quality care according to best clinical governance models and in accordance with trust policies.
  • To promote a seamless service of care for specialist breast care and patients undergoing treatment through liaison with all members of the health care team within primary and secondary care.

Person specification

  • Education & professional Qualifications
  • Masters degree or working towards.
  • Appropriate teaching certificate or extensive teaching experience.
  • Evidence of recent professional / management / leadership development.
  • Non-medical prescribing course or willingness to undertake.
  • Advanced assessment qualification.
  • Experience
    • Substantial experience in a senior nurse operational role in an acute NHS setting.
    • Experience in setting up and running nurse led clinics.
    • Knowledge and experience of leading significant change, delivering tangible and sustained results.
    • Experience of motivating staff and improving individuals and team performance.
    • Able to build rapport and credibility with senior clinical and managerial colleagues.

    • Excellent communication skills and highly developed interpersonal and influencing skills.
    • Ability to act autonomously in planning & implementing tasks.
    • Proven ability to influence others through research findings.
