We are looking for Senior Orthopaedic Scrub Nurse / Charge Nurse / ODP to support Chase Farm Theatres. The successful candidate will be expected to lead the Orthopaedic Team into the future as we are named as the North London Orthopaedic Centre. We recently became one of a few hospitals nationally to become an Accredited GIRFT Surgical Hub.

The post holder is responsible for the assessment of care needs for all patients, ensuring appropriately planned care is implemented and evaluated. To provide specialist advice without direct supervision and to lead the multidisciplinary team in the absence of the Team Leader. To assist in the leadership and development of an identified group of practitioners within the Department.

Main duties of the job:

  • Liaise with the Team Leader and Theatre coordinator to ensure that patients are prepared for Theatre in reasonable time and admitted to the Theatre department in line with the 5 Steps to Safer Surgery and the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist.
  • Assist in the safe handling, transfer and positioning of patients between all areas of the theatre department; including complex cases and preparing & transporting portable monitoring equipment to assist with the transfer of patients to Intensive Care Unit/High Dependency Unit following anaesthetic intervention.
  • Provide skilled assistance when participating in scrub and circulating duties in the Orthopaedic Theatre.
  • Liaise & communicate with other departments e.g. laboratory services, EBME, Sterile Services Unit.
  • Ensure all Orthopaedic Theatre equipment is checked as suitable for use prior to each patient’s operation.
  • Ensure all Orthopaedic instrument trays and consumables are prepared and fit for use prior to each patient’s operation.

Person specification:

  • World Class Values: Demonstrable ability to meet the Trust Values
  • Education/Qualifications: Registered Nurse/ODP, Recognised Post Graduate Theatre Course ENB176, Mentorship Course (e.g. ENB 998, D32 D33) or assessor course or willingness to enrol
  • Experience: Significant experience in Orthopaedic scrub and circulating practice (at Band 5 or above), Experience in managing junior staff (HCA/students) including appraisal, performance, absence, selection and recruitment, Good written, numeracy & verbal communications skills, Awareness of clinical issues within the theatre dept, Able to work as part of a team within set boundaries, Able to prioritise workload, Able to work under pressure in a dynamic environment and manage difficult situations, Positive and motivated with attention to detail, Computer skills including some Electronic patient record IT system.
