An exciting opportunity has arisen for a dynamic and enthusiastic General Surgery Locum Consultant with a specialist interest in Emergency General Surgery. We are seeking an individual who is passionate about delivering high-quality care and committed to shaping the future of our Emergency General Surgery and Surgical Ambulatory Care services. The successful applicant will join our friendly and forward-thinking General Surgery Department within the Surgery and Cancer Division at Leighton Hospital, Crewe. You will play a key role in driving positive service development, supporting clinical excellence, and contributing to an improving patient experience. This post is offered as an 8PA locum consultant role, for a fixed term of 12 months.

Main duties of the job

This is a 12 month locum post providing an exciting opportunity to actively develop a Surgical Ambulatory Care Unit (SACU) service. The SACU is already established in its own dedicated area, however, we have funding for this post to progress and develop this essential service in support of providing the best care for our patients. The candidate will need to be dynamic and enthusiastic to drive forward this positive development. Alongside SACU service delivery and development the post will also include some general surgical outpatient clinics and elective operating sessions. The post holder will join a team of Consultants with interests in Colorectal Surgery, Upper GI Surgery, Emergency General Surgery, General Surgery and Breast Surgery.

Our services include planned and unplanned/emergency care, cardiac and critical care, child health, maternity, and intermediate care across Leighton Hospital in Crewe, Victoria Infirmary in Northwich, and Elmhurst Intermediate Care Centre in Winsford. Through our community arm, Central Cheshire Integrated Care Partnership, we deliver extensive services in 26 medical centres and schools in collaboration with Cheshire and Wirral Partnership NHS FT and the South Cheshire and Vale Royal GP Alliance. With 500 beds and around 5,500 staff, we are one of the area’s largest employers.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Clinical duties include SACU clinics and outpatients clinics, theatre, administrative time, and pre- and post-operative ward visits. The post is offered at 8 PA but under the terms of the 2003 Consultant Contract, candidates who wish to conduct private practice would be required to offer an additional programmed activity.

  • Experience
    • Working as a Specialist Registrar in General Surgery or equivalent
  • Ability
    • Evidence of ability to lead a team effectively
    • Commitment to effective departmental management
  • Audit and Research
    • Interest and knowledge of audit and quality improvement
    • Evidence of completed audit projects
    • Experience of research
    • Relevant general surgical / colorectal publications in peer reviewed journals
  • Teaching and Education
    • Evidence to allow accreditation as a Consultant Educational Supervisor for trainee doctors with the GMC
  • Other
    • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff and patients
    • A willingness to accept that flexibility is required to meet the changing needs of the NHS
    • Up to date knowledge of NHS reforms.

    Key Messages

Staff recruited from outside the NHS will usually be appointed at the entry point (bottom) of the pay band. Appointments are subject to a 6-month probationary period. You are required to pay for a DBS disclosure where the post requires one, and we encourage applicants to join and remain registered with the DBS update service. We do not reimburse travel to interview expenses.
