Job overview

Applications are invited for a Consultant in Endodontics post. The position is based at Birmingham Dental Hospital, which has strong academic and training links to the University of Birmingham School of Dentistry. This is a substantive, part-time post (0.8 WTE) and has been approved by the Royal College of Surgeons.

The successful candidate will have significant experience in delivering Endodontics at Specialist Level and working in a Consultant Led Service Environment. We are excited about the right person joining our skilled and enthusiastic team whichprovides a full range of outpatient services.

The post-holder(s) will be involved in all departmental activities, including undergraduate and postgraduate supervision and training, audit and governance.

The successful post-holder will be expected to contribute to the triaging of referrals and clinical assessment of referred patients. Some patients will be managed by developing and communicating a treatment plan which can be delivered by the referring primary care dental practitioner.

The Consultant will be involved, as appropriate, in undergraduate, postgraduate and continuing education, in addition to the training of Resident hospital staff and will contribute to the training programme for Specialty Registrars and DCTs. There are a number of full and part-time junior NHS and academic clinical staff in resident grades who are involved in both clinical service and teaching of undergraduates and postgraduate students.

The post holder will be expected to give advice and assistance to members of the Resident staff and Specialty Dentists within the Department as the need and demand arises.

As a teaching unit, Birmingham Dental Hospital and School of Dentistry undertake a wide range of research activities for which excellent facilities are available. The duties of this post are primarily of a service nature and as such, no specific requirement to pursue research is included. An interested appointee, however, will be encouraged to pursue his or her interests, subject to the needs of the service and may be asked to participate in established clinical trial activities subject to appropriate training.

Person specification

  • Holding or eligible for full registration with the General Dental Council (GDC) of the United Kingdom.
  • On the GDC Endodontic Specialist List or eligible for inclusion on this within six months of the interview date (e.g. via a Certificate of Completion of Specialty Training or a successful GDC assessed application).
  • Intercollegiate Specialty Fellowship exit examination in Restorative Dentistry or equivalent i.e. possession of a CCST in Endodontics.
  • Fellowship in Dental Surgery, FDS, or Membership of the Faculty of Dental Surgery, MJDF or equivalent.
  • Higher degree i.e. MSc/PhD or equivalent
  • Applicants who are Nationals from another European country or elsewhere overseas would have to show equivalence to the 5 years minimum training period in the National Health Service for Restorative Dentistry.
  • Interest and experience in the broad range of Restorative Dentistry.

Experience

  • Extensive experience in the delivery of consultant-led Endodontics services.
  • Extensive experience in the teaching/training and supervision of junior staff and dentists or doctors in training.
  • Experience of running/co-ordinating multi-disciplinary team care.

Teaching

  • Experience of postgraduate and undergraduate teaching in Restorative Dentistry/Endodontics or allied subjects.
  • Teaching skills qualification such as FHEA or PGCert in medical education.

Audit and Research

  • Evidence of effective participation in Clinical Audit.
  • Evidence of research relevant to the specialty.
  • Ability to critically appraise scientific literature.
  • Publications in peer reviewed journals.

Management

  • Evidence of management of Clinical Services.
  • Evidence of leadership skills.
  • Participated in management and leadership training.

Personal Qualities

  • Able to work independently
  • Demonstrate ability to take responsibility and be an effective decision maker.
  • Good team building skills.
  • Ability to innovate and embrace new ways of working.
  • Able to demonstrate equality, diversity and inclusion awareness.

In accordance with UK Home Office requirements, Band 2 clinical and non-clinical roles and Band 3 Non-Clinical roles are not eligible for sponsorship.

Please note that the majority of non-clinical roles (Agenda for Change Band 3 – 6) with the exception of those which appear on this list – link , will not meet the minimum requirements set by UK Visas and Immigration to sponsor candidates to work in the UK.
